cyclone24 1,913 Posted October 3, 2011 Don Lapre, TV pitchman accused of fraud, found dead in Arizona jail cell of apparent suicide BY PHILIP CAULFIELD DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Monday, October 3rd 2011, 8:19 AM TV pitchman Don Lapre was found dead of an apparent suicide in his jail cell in Florence, Ariz., just two days before his fraud trial was set to begin. Embattled TV pitchman Don Lapre was found dead in his Arizona jail cell on Sunday, just days before his $52 million fraud trail was set to begin, authorities said. The 47-year-old infomercial huckster was accused of scamming at least 220,000 people by selling worthless vitamins, using get-rich-quick pyramid schemes and phony Internet businesses. U.S. Marshals spokesman Matt Hershey told Phoenix's KSAZ television that his death appears to be a suicide, but authorities were still investigating. Hershey did not say how Lapre may have killed himself. A grand jury indicted Lapre in June on 41 counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and promotional money laundering though his company, "The Greatest Vitamin in the World." The company's "customers" spent nearly $51.8 million to sell vitamins and recruit others to do the same. But only 5,000 people received about $6.4 million in commission, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Meanwhile, Lapre reaped at least $2.2 million from between 2004 to 2007, the department said. Dude started it all from a one bedroom apartment.....and ended in a one bedroom apartment. Ashes to ashes my friend.
Scary Gary 19 Posted October 3, 2011 Well..here's what I can't figure out. Take a look at this site: http://www.donlapre.com/ Scroll about 1/2 ways down, and there is a picture on the right (right below the picture of the girl with the bubble). I can't believe they let someone pose with him for a picture after he committed suicide. That is just sick, folks.

tubby_mcgee 700 Posted October 3, 2011 IMO, it's sad that it got to the point it did, where he took his own life. It's not Don's fault that moron's bought his stuff, then complained they didn't get rich quick. The gubment is after guys like Lapre, Trudeau, the fella with the store in Duluth, MN that made $16k per day selling incense, etc.....claiming their products could be hazardous to people's health, or they aren't really healthy.......YET...they allow smoking to take place daily, with over 400,000 dying from smoking related deaths per year in the USA. "You can't sell that! It might hurt someone!" "Smokes? Sure....flame on, Americans! "
Frank M 181 Posted October 3, 2011 IMO, it's sad that it got to the point it did, where he took his own life. It's not Don's fault that moron's bought his stuff, then complained they didn't get rich quick. What's sad is that he was so hooked into being rich that he felt the need to scam others, and when the threat of it being taken away arrived, he checked out. Committing suicide is cowardly, but committing suicide when you have kids....I have no sympathy whatsoever.
