How are Dems claiming this as "balanced" approach to the fiscal cliff?

Recommended Posts

Obama ran on raising the marginal rate for top earners. Romney ran on supposedly closing loopholes, etc.

The current GOP plan is Romney's plan. Romney lost the election. Obama won. The people have spoken.

Just last year Obama was saying we could raise $1.2 Trillion in revenue by closing loopholes and eliminating deductions. Now he claims it is impossible to raise $800 Billion doing just that.

I guess he has "evolved" on this issue too.

Psssst. Learn math. 83 > 50. We're stepping in the right direction. HTH

Why are you bring a knife to a gun fight? That may have been the weakest counter argument in the history of the board.

IF you want to talk about a weak argument, this whole thing is an oxymoron... Any cuts to spending, and any increases in taxes will lower GDP growth, this is accepted by pretty much all economists... C + I + G + X = GDP... So to claim spending cuts are off the table because it would hurt the economy, yet be steadfast that raising rates need to happen is completely oxymoronic...

He'd have some intellectual credibiilty if Obama said he isn't cutting spending and isn't raising rates because the economy sucks and making the economy worse to chase a few federal dollars is shortsighted.

You can't economically grow through austerity any more than you can add muscle to your body while losing fat...

You'd also have intellectual credibility if you said, we need to cut the fat out now and take our medicine so we can grow in the future... Cut non essential spending and put more money in peoples hands so we grow, but short term the economy would likely dip.

Either of those plans are at least consistent.

However nominally attacking the rich is the last outlet for liberals to grow govt, as the people have finally grown concern over debt/deficits, and its politically more difficult to take that lump of flesh from the middle class... Basically they are running out of idiots they can con into financing their lunacy.

Its a bastardization of his platform which was in relation to a strategy to deal with the deficit/debt... Emphasis on dealing with the deficit/debt...

They b$tch, complain and blame each other while they continue to spend whatever they want by borrowing .40 on every dollar they spend. They should be fired but the American people gave their approval by re-electing them. The American people then take sides when both sides are to blame and neither has the answer.

We haven’t passed a budget in 3 1/2 years and they are going to fix this.

Americans are so stupid.

And the beat goes on.

They aren't stupid, they've been led to believe that the ecnonomy doesn't matter because it only affects the rich... And they've been led to believe they are morally superior for being shortsighted for short term gain at the detriment of long term prosperity....

Basically they are acting in ways that made them poor and at the bottom of the food chain in the first place.

I've a hunch it'll be the GOP that's less irresponsible in this negotiation. Mostly because they seem to be willling to finally dump Deficit Grover.
