SuperSteelers 1 Posted August 12, 2014 We've had a lot of discusions regarding the trading of draft picks in our league. A few years ago a former manager traded away players for 5 additional draft picks in the next season's draft. Many people in our league got upset and were pissed because he was essentially "throwing in the towel" on the current season. Also, there are a lot of loopholes associated with trading picks, etc. What do other people do in this regard in their leagues?

giveup 1 Posted August 13, 2014 I'd love to hear how other people make this work in their keeper leagues as well. It has been proposed by one of my owners. My biggest concern at the moment is a team trading away 4-5 picks, like you mentioned, and then not coming back. No one will want to step into a team that has to sit out so many rounds of the draft. There are tools out there that help compare picks. i.e. is a first round worth a 3rd and 7th. But it is hard enough to compare players and determine fair value, now when you toss in picks+players it seems to get messy. It's been suggested it be a 1 for 1, 2 for 2 type of transaction. i.e. no Player for picks. So equal number of player/picks coming and going. This seems to make the most sense as far as determining value and making sure it helps both teams.
saut 7 Posted August 13, 2014 In my league, you have to maintain 16 draft picks at all times. Trades for players usually look like this: Team A Gives 2nd Round Pick Team B Gives AJ Green, 5th Round Pick If you're worried about people getting crazy with it, put some kind of limits on pick trades up front. Frozenbeernuts 2,264 Posted August 13, 2014 Some suggestions Eliminate trading picks all together. I am in 2 keeper leagues, one of which doesnt trade picks. Though i essentially tried to skirt this 2 years ago by trying to acquire julio jones by selecting whoever that owner wanted at my next pick and then swapping. Do not allow trading of future picks. This is the best solution if your league wants to retain the added dimension of draft pick trades. Do not allow a team to trade away players that arent officially keepers. Example: Team A has Bmarsh, mccoy, lacy. The league allows 2 keepers so team a trades away bmarsh for a third while still keeping lacy and mccoy. Instead team a would have to trade away mccoy or lacy; the acquired pick/picks take the place of the keeper.

Yep--this is how we do it. </montelljordan> An equal amount of picks have to be exchanged for the trade to be valid. We also collect next year's dues at the draft to discourage people from dropping out of the keeper league and leaving behind a wrecked team. You can always refund a team owner who leaves if it's a good faith reason and not just sour grapes, but it's nice to have the money in hand in case you need to incentivize a replacement owner (sure, this team is crappy this year, but it's free!) or just to buy several cases of beer for everyone still in the league.
