Bill Clinton calls for migrants to 'begin working, paying taxes and paying their way' in New York City

Former President Bill Clinton agreed with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Saturday by arguing that New York City’s "Right to Shelter Law" must be changed...."They come here, and we’re supposed to shelter people who can’t get work permits for six months. We need to change that," he said, noting that migrants have a right to begin "paying their way" in American society....The former president said that America's low birth rate requires that the economy be shored up by either "immigrants or machines."

The disastrous, forgotten 1996 law that created today's immigration problem

....President Bill Clinton signed a bill that overhauled immigration enforcement in the US and laid the groundwork for the massive deportation machine that exists today.....Both welfare reform and the crime bills Clinton signed have been relitigated during a contentious Democratic primary, but the 1996 immigration bill — the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act ....It was a bundle of provisions with a single goal: to increase penalties on immigrants who had violated US law in some way (whether they were unauthorized immigrants who'd violated immigration law or legal immigrants who'd committed other crimes)......It got easier to deport people. Immigrants convicted of crimes weren't the only ones stripped of the ability to argue their case before a judge before getting deported. So did anyone apprehended within 100 miles of the border. And IIRIRA required the government to hold more immigrants in detention before deporting them — making it substantially harder for them to get lawyers.....

....Bill Clinton had personal experience with immigration as a political liability: the only election loss of his career (his gubernatorial reelection campaign of 1980) came after he'd agreed to house Cuban refugees in Arkansas after the Mariel boatlift. He was convinced, even as president, that being soft on immigration was a no-go for Democrats — just like being soft on crime or welfare....

Bowman condemns use of ‘Nazi’ in talking points put out by his office

......In the memo obtained by Politico Monday, Bowman’s office suggested several talking points his Democratic colleagues could use to defend the lawmaker, including one that targets what the office claimed are Nazi members of the Republican Party.....The suggestion was written as, “I believe Congressman Bowman when he says this was an accident. Republicans need to instead focus their energy on the Nazi members of their party before anything else.....”

.....Bowman has maintained his pulling of the fire alarm was an accident as he rushed to vote on the last-minute stopgap measure rolled out by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) earlier in the day.....The police also noted officers “had previously placed signs with clear language that explained the door was secured and marked as an emergency exit only.”

Senate warns of increased crime on Capitol Hill as lawmakers and staff face string of robberies, carjackings

.....The Senate warned lawmakers and Capitol Hill staffers to take precautions amid a rise in crime throughout D.C., following a series of violent attacks against members of Congress and those who work for them......In a Friday bulletin to Senate chiefs of staff, administrative managers, chief clerks and staff directors, the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms suggested tips to reduce the risk of being carjacked and warned of an increase in carjackings around the nation's capital. The warning came the day after a Senate staff member was robbed at gunpoint and weeks after a House Democrat was carjacked.

"Local authorities note an increase in carjacking incidents in and around Capitol Hill and the District of Columbia," the bulletin, obtained by Fox News Digital from multiple Senate sources, states......Another section primarily discussed what an individual should do if "confronted by a carjacker with a weapon."....From armed robberies to carjackings, a variety of lawmakers and Capitol Hill staff members have found themselves at the center of violent attacks on the streets of D.C. in recent months....A staff member for Republican Sen. Katie Britt was robbed at gunpoint Thursday night, Washington D.C. Police confirmed Friday.  According to FOX 5 D.C., Amanda Peper, a scheduler for the senator, was robbed at gunpoint at 8:30 p.m. about a mile from the Capitol.....Police said Peper was walking to her building when she was approached by a man who pointed a gun in her face and said, "Give me your purse and keys." Peper complied with the mugger and gave him her belongings, police said....."It is infuriating and completely unacceptable that an American who is on Capitol Hill to serve her country cannot safely walk the streets of Washington, D.C., at 8:30 at night because of the out-of-control crime in this city," Britt's office said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Earlier this month, Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar was carjacked by three armed attackers while parking his car in Washington’s Navy Yard neighborhood, an area where other lawmakers live that's less than two miles south of the Capitol building....."Three guys came out of nowhere, and they pointed guns at me," Cuellar told reporters after the incident. "I looked at one with a gun and another with a gun out the one behind me. So, they said they wanted my car......’"

In June, an unidentified congressional staffer for Minnesota GOP Rep. Brad Finstad was attacked at gunpoint near his home in D.C. after returning from the congressional baseball game......"In Washington, D.C. and cities across the country, anti-police, soft-on-crime policies have created lawless societies that endanger the public and empower criminal behavior," Finstad wrote at the time.

Similarly, Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul announced in March a member of his staff was "brutally attacked" by a perpetrator with a knife on the streets of Washington, D.C....."This past weekend a member of my staff was brutally attacked in broad daylight in Washington, D.C.," Paul said in a statement at the time. "I ask you to join Kelley and me in praying for a speedy and complete recovery and thanking the first responders, hospital staff and police for their diligent actions......the attack noted the victim was an adult male who had "life-threatening injuries."

Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minn., also became the victim of a crime in February when she was assaulted in the elevator at her Washington, D.C., apartment building.....Craig was getting coffee in the apartment's lobby when she noticed a man pacing. He got into the elevator with her and said he needed to use the bathroom and that he was going to enter her apartment, a U.S. Capitol Police special agent wrote in court papers.....When she said he couldn't go into her apartment, he punched her in the face and grabbed her neck before she threw a hot cup of coffee at him, prosecutors said.......acting D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith announced the city had reached its 200th murder this month, putting the city on pace to have among the worst annual body counts since the 1990s..... In 2023, total violent crime is on the rise again, up nearly 40% from last year, according to police data. Property crime is also surging, with motor vehicle thefts increasing 106% and robberies up 65%.

DeSantis says he would cancel student visas, deport foreign nationals celebrating Hamas if elected president

....Republican presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he would rescind student visas of foreign nationals in the U.S. and send them back to their home countries if they expressed support for Hamas terrorists' attack against Israel...."You see students demonstrating in our country in favor of Hamas," DeSantis said. "Remember, some of them are foreigners."....DeSantis said he will be "canceling your visa, and I’m sending you home" if he wins the presidency in 2024.

Last week, the governor announced that nearly 300 Floridians arrived in the Sunshine State on flights from Israel following his executive order authorizing logistical, rescue and evacuation operations through Florida's Division of Emergency Management. The flights were completed through a partnership with the search and rescue non-profit group Project DYNAMO, and efforts for further evacuation flights to Florida are expected.....The Florida Division of Emergency Management also sent cargo planes to Israel containing medical supplies, clothing items, hygiene products and children's toys, according to the governor's office.

Context is everything. Maddow was not saying that there would be executions for those who work at MSNBC.

She was talking about Trump cancelling or killing the news, not the people.

Quote

After The View co-host Sara Haines predicted Trump would "cancel the news," Maddow said the Republican wants to "put MSNBC on trial so he can execute us."
