"New Jersey, where I'm from, is segregated. As a black person, no matter how nice I am, hard working, I cannot live where I want to live. Blacks are forced to live in overcrowded urban areas where there are no or little access to resources such as grocery stores. Nothing is near. There are miles of areas of just people living in poverty, no stores, no jobs, only government low income housing filled with blacks. The thing is, if you are poor and need low income housing there are options if you are white. You are not sent to Newark projects, you are sent to suburban apartments and no one knows you are living in subsidized housing. You are just a tenant. Everyone else is working. They don't know you are living in a subsidized rented apartment or home. Blacks are forced or relegated to projects where you are in a food desert. It's all poor people for miles and miles. That was not created by blacks. The schools have nothing in them. The books aren't modern, there is no air conditioning or equipment and the teachers tend to be....not the best. They aren't completely certified...there are alternative means to become a teacher and we tended to get those teachers (hadn't graduated yet-we had loads of subs).

Even if you have the brains, means and motivation to move out of your community, racism prevents you from purchasing out of your neighborhood as people refuse to rent or sell to blacks. Even if you are a good person, as most people are, they refuse. Times have changed, yes, but still today, I cannot rent or buy in the Ironbound section of Newark. There are locked neighborhoods."
