Attn Cinephiles - The Outlaw Josey Wales 4K

Recommended Posts

Warner Bros recently did brand new restorations and re-released Dirty Harry, The Outlaw Josey Wales and Pale Rider.  I got the first two and they are beautifully restored.  Top notch compression that removes any imperfections, but leaves the film look.  For anyone that loves those old films like I do, this is a must have for your collections.

I loved Granny Hawkins

Granny Hawkins:

They say you're a hard put and desperate man, Josey Wales. They're goin' to heel and hide you to a barn door. You know what I say?

Josey Wales:
What's that?

Granny Hawkins:
I say that big talk's worth doodly-squat. Now, them poultices be laced with feathermoss and mustard root. Mind you drop water on 'em occasional and keep 'em damp.

Josey Wales may be my favorite Clint movie.  Would be interesting to see that tobacco spit hit the scorpion in 4K.

Josey Wales was my fathers favorite.  I have it tied with Unforgiven in 2nd, Good/Bad/Ugly is my favorite, I'm just a huge fan of Tuco.  For an older movie though, these two are probably the best transfers I've ever seen, absolutely gorgeous.

Tuco is a great character.  I prefer, only slightly, Eli Wallach as Calvera in the Magnificent Seven.  When he delivers the line that "If he did not want them sheared, God would not have made them sheep", I love it.  Of course Tuco washing his feet in potential drinking water in teh dessert as Clint suffers is classic.

Mine is "High Plains Drifter." Pretty fukked up movie. Then I round out my top four with "Fistful of Dollars," "For a Few Dollars More" and "Good, Bad and Ugly," in no particular order.

I don't think "Josey Wales" holds up like those others.

Those are my top 3 as well.  I'd probably put Unforgiven 2 and G/B/U 3.  I love Tuco as well, and there are so many memorable scenes/lines, but to me the other two are more... serious?  Deep?  There are more layers to the story.

Similarly, to me, the formulaic spaghetti westerns all just kinda run together for me.  I'm a sucker for characters like Josey, similar ones are Brad Pitt (Tristan) in Legends of the Fall, and Howard Roark in The Fountainhead.  People who do what they believe in, and in doing so, become reluctant heroes to the people around them.

Pale Rider is probably my #4.  It violates what I just said about being formulaic, but I like it, so shoot me.  🤠

  • I wore this frock coat in Washington, before the war. We wore them because we belonged to the five civilized tribes. We dressed ourselves up like Abraham Lincoln. We only got to see the Secretary of the Interior, and he said: "Boy! You boys sure look civilized.!" He congratulated us and gave us medals for looking so civilized. We told him about how our land had been stolen and our people were dying. When we finished he shook our hands and said, "endeavor to persevere!" They stood us in a line: John Jumper, Chili McIntosh, Buffalo Hump, Jim Buckmark, and me — I am Lone Watie. They took our pictures. And the newspapers said, "Indians vow to endeavor to persevere."
  • We thought about it for a long time, "Endeavor to persevere." And when we had thought about it long enough, we declared war on the Union.
  • I didn't surrender neither. But they took my horse and made him surrender ... they have him pullin' a wagon up in Kansas, I'll bet.

It's this bit of wisdom that every single James Bond villain fails at is my favorite Tucoism.
