KEEPER HELP...

Recommended Posts

RULES:

12 Team Keeper League - Non-PPR - 6pts all TDs

1pt per 1yrds rushing/receiving - 3pt bonus for 100yrds

1pt per 25yrds passing - 3pt bonus for 100yrds

Must give up the draft round the player was originally drafted.

Can keep players for 3 years only.

Keep up to 4 players.

Undrafted players are keeper eligible in the last round.

Money league.

I have several good options for keepers. My teams best options, their draft round and when they were drafted is shown below:

2nd - M. Lynch - 2007

3rd - Calvin Johnson - 2008

4th - Kevin Smith - 2008

8th - Michael Turner - 2007

12th - Brandon Marshall - 2007

17th - Matt Ryan - 2008

I am heavily leaning towards keeping Calvin Johnson, Kevin Smith, Michael Turner and Brandon Marshall. I am contemplating either dropping Kevin Smith or Brandon Marshall for Matt Ryan. I normally wouldn't do this, but in a 6pt per TD league and being able to keep Ryan in the last round of the draft seems like extremely good value. I'm really waffling on this one... Thoughts?

Also, I will be picking 9th in the first round (made the playoffs last year) and then again in the 2nd on the snake. Based on players I think will be kept by other teams (and some that will be released), I feel like I will have the option of players like Clinton Portis, Steve Smith, and maybe Tom Brady in the first, and then players like Ryan Grant, TJ Housh, Roy Williams, Moreno, Lynch in the 2nd. Assuming Brady is gone, would you go with a tandem of Portis and then Housh (if available) or Steve Smith and then Ryan Grant? Thoughts? If I go one of these routes, I am hoping that a Schaub or Palmer will be there when I pick again in the 5th.

You forgot to include how many RBs and WRs you start.

Turner for an 8th is obvious. Calvin is going to be a force the next several years and is worth your 3rd. As questionable as I think Marshall could be, you almost have to hold onto him again for a 12th.

The last keeper depends somewhat on your league starters. If it's 2RB, I would think about dropping Smith and taking the best RB you can with your first pick. If you can start up to 3RB, I'd think a bit harder about it. It all depends on how you value Ryan--I don't love him for this year, but think he'll be a decent starter and has huge potential for a year or two down the road. If you think he can be a top-10 starter, that kind of value is where you get the most for your picks in a keeper. However, the catch is that, with up to 48 players being kept, you're going to have pretty slim RB pickings in the first couple rounds.

I was in the process of typing up my response and then this response popped up. I think this is spot on. Starting lineup requirements are important. If you are keeping Kevin Smith to be your 3rd RB, and think you can grab a #2 RB and a QB better than Ryan early, then I wouldn't mind if you kept Smith.

Personally I'd keep Turner, Calvin, Marshall, and Matt Ryan. This is just too much value getting him in the last round. Personally I think he is a top 10 QB this year. They have a very solid line and great running game. Roddy White is quickly becoming a premier receiver. They also added a top TE in Tony Gonzalez. I think this offense will score a TON. I could see Ryan reaching 3600+ yards and 25 TDs this year.

I apologize guys. I thought I had it all there but apparently I missed the lineup...

We start QB/RB/RB/WR/WR/WR or TE/TE/K/DEF

So, sounds like you guys think Ryan in the last round is too good a value to pass up. Anybody else with a thought...

Calvin Johnson

Michael Turner

Kevin Smith

Matt Ryan

As a Bears fan, Orton has NO deep ball throwing ability, which will hurt Marshall's numbers.

I don't think Ryan is anymore than a very marginal QB2. He barely cracked the top 15 last year, and the Falcons are still a run first team. The value is there, but I'd rather pay a little more for a guy who's actually going to see the field. Orton not being able to go deep doesn't affect Marshall that much. Marshall makes most of his damage mid range and across the middle. He's more of a Terrell Owens, than a Randy Moss. He's also in a contract year. Even if he isn't top 5 this year, he could land in a GREAT situation next year.

Kevin Smith

Brandon Marshall

Thanks for mine.

Matt Ryan threw for 3440 yards and 16 TD's last year. That was in his rookie year. He was really never let loose and kind of protected and asked to manage the team for the most part. Now by all accounts I've read he has had a tremendous offseason. He will naturally make some improvements in reading defenses and just the overall feel for the game. Also, the Falcons have added perhaps the best or at least top 3 Tight End in football in a Tony Gonzalez. A guy that is a GREAT red zone target. You don't add a guy like this if you at least don't have some intention of throwing the ball a little more. This Falcons offense is going to be very good this year and score a ton I have a feeling. All that being said, don't you think Ryan's numbers increase some. Even modest gains to 3600 yards and 20 TD's put him in QB1 discussion. If he gets a few more red zone oppurtunities, I could see that TD number closer to 25. He isn't a top 5 QB by any means, but I think top 10 is definitely a good possibility. Just my opinion though. Getting a QB like this in the last round seems like a steal to me. Kevin Smith is a 4th or 5th round RB, so you really aren't getting much value out of keeping him.

Thanks for the help fellas..

So, say I keep Turner, Johnson, Marshall, & Ryan - how would you proceed in the 1st and 2nd rounds? Would you grab Portis and then T.J. Housh or grab Steve Smith and then Ryan Grant?

Which looks better?

QB: Matt Ryan

RB: Michael Turner

RB: Ryan Grant

WR: Calvin Johnson

WR: Steve Smith

WR: Brandon Marshall

QB: Matt Ryan

RB: Michael Turner

RB: Clinton Portis

WR: Calvin Johnson

WR: TJ Housh

WR: Brandon Marshall
