Soundgarden was the first of the famed Seattle-scene bands, but surprisingly the last of the group to have a major breakthrough album. Superunknown makes a strong case as one of the best rock albums of the 90s. Aside from the five tracks that were released as singles (all of which landed in the Modern Rock Tracks top 25) is the criminally underappreciated "4th of July". Chris Cornell's vocal range was never tested quite as much on this record as some previous work ("Say Hello 2 Heaven" from the Temple of the Dog project and "Jesus Christ Pose" from the band's previous record, Badmotorfinger) but there is little doubt that he boasted the most talented vocal chords of the era (which he nearly destroyed on the subsequent tour from gross overuse).
