Redskins Off-season

Recommended Posts

I can't think of another way to get the board back into the swing of things, then talking Redskins football...

This seems to be the wish list for this off season.,..

Brandon Lloyd

Andre Carter

Adam Archuleta

Todd Collins

Darren Howard

and maybe Brian Williams CB (Minny)

Wouldn't be a bad offseason for a team in cap hell

You'll be lucky if they sign one of those.

Is Lloyd a UFA this season?

I also heard that Randel El was someone the Redskins were talking to.

Seriously. How in the world can a team that was $4.9M over the cap as of last night be talking to fairly big name guys like that? It just makes me believe that Ralph Wilson was right about the new CBA.

When a team like the Bills has about $14M under the cap and doesn't feel like they can bring in any big name guys, but a team like the Redskins with barely any extra money under the cap has a list of some of the biggest FA names coming in, there's still a problem.

I don't quite understand it either. I guess the "cash over cap" will come in to play. The 'Skins just better not give up next year's first for Lloyd.

I hear a package of players/picks - but I don't seem them giving up next years 1st.

I think is one of those players that has high pick ability, but the Niners would happily negotiate a deal for players and a lesser draft choice. There have been repeated articles last season that hinted at Lloyd having a me-first attitude with the team and for every great catch Lloyd had on the highlight reel there were plays that the team needed, but he couldn't follow through.

Fantasy-wise, I have always been a fan of Lloyd's potential. I think Washington would be a potentially good fit with Lloyd opposite Santana Moss and playing under a veteran QB like Brunell (if Campbell doesn't get a shot this year). The only issue is whether Lloyd can go over the middle more consistently than he demonstrated in San Fran. I'm wary, because he seemed to be a perimeter receiver with the Niners. If that is the case, I'm wondering who is going to make the tough, intermediate catches after Cooley? Moss isn't that type of player.

What are they gonna do with Moss, Randle-El and Lloyd? If you could get them at good prices that's one thing, but you're gonna gaurantee 10 mil to Lloyd to be you're #2/3 WR with Randle-El? I don't get it. Besides, they need a good QB before any of the WRs will really matter.

If they get Archuleta and Carter they'd be good additions to an already tough defense, but the WR signings wouldn't impress me much.

if they pay Lloyd $17 million over 7 years

they pay him 3 million a year for 5 years

then cut him...

thats 10 million + an extra million per season

Randle El would get a similar contract...

so Id take those 2 players at 3 million per season in a sport that the salary cap is over $100 million dollars

All Danny Boy is doing is GUARENTEEING the money - its not rocket science...

and to say Brunell is not a "good" QB is just ignorant - I know he is not flashy, he isn't great... and yes, he does stink up the field at times, and makes bad throws... but he too sya he is not good... well, maybe u just look at stats at the end of the game... to determine agood" QB or not. -- Because with Brunell at the helm - Santana Moss had a VERY GOOD SEASON - and every team was double covering Moss - since there was no true #2 WR -- but i guess thats still not 'good" enough - to be considered good.

Moss, Lloyd, and Randel El sound like the 2000's version of the smurfs, no?

As a Lloyd owner in dynasty leagues, this could be nice--finally might get to be a worth while #3 WR in a lineup.

Who said it was rocket science? I'm just saying I don't think the moves would help the Redskins offense all that much. It looks better on paper, but in overall production on the field and in terms of W's and L's, I don't think Randle-El and Lloyd will help the 'Skins much. Randle-El would make the special teams more dangerous, but it's hard to gauge the impact that would have.

As for Brunell - he stinks. The season Santana Moss had last year says more about his own talent than it does about anything Brunell brought to the table. Brunell got off to a hot start last season. In the final 7 games he didn't pass for more than 200 yards even once. He only went over 175 one time and the Redskins were sliding down the stretch. Brunell isn't going to take the Redskins to the next level and therefore he's a waste of the Redskins time in my opinion.

"sliding down the stretch"...shows how much you know,..

Skins won their last 5 games - (add 1 more for the playoff win)- so Brunnell was "winning" - in spite of his stats.

and if the Skins has NOT ONE #2 WR - how could you say Lloyd/Randle-El wouldn't improve the offense? Please elaborate? If its mainly your opinion - thats' OK - but the fact that Lloyd and/or Randle -EL have more talent the the entire WRs corp minus Moss... so it is an upgrade...

It's definetly an upgrade, but do you think it translates into more wins for the team? I'm not trying to bash them simply cause they are the Skins. If I was going to do that I would criticize the possible additions to the defense, but I think those would be solid moves.

Adding the WRs just seems like a typical Snyder move trying to grab some new players just because he can, not so much because it helps him build a better team. He needs to learn to build through the draft, that's how you win in the NFL.

As for the sliding comment, meh. The point is they weren't impressing or scaring anybody as they scraped their way into the playoffs after the hot start they got off to. And the playoff win came in what was possibly the most horrendous playoff game ever. Somebody had to win it.

IF your team is stocking up on players from SF and STL...that's not good news.

Man Portis, you must have been holding your breath for the new CBA, it looked like the Skins were going to have a tough time fielding a whole team let alone go after FAs. I'm still not sure how they have room to sign ANYBODY, but them I guess when you have a free wheelin' kinda owner, anything is possible.

Redskins Get Lloyd, And Look for More

Randle El Is Also Being Courted

By Jason La Canfora and Howard Bryant

Washington Post Staff Writers

Sunday, March 12, 2006; Page E01

On the first day of free agency, the Washington Redskins yesterday acquired wide receiver Brandon Lloyd from the San Francisco 49ers, lost last season's starting tight end and began wooing four talented targets over dinner.

At 6:30 p.m. yesterday, a caravan of four limousines lined up in front of Redskins Park to shuttle top Redskins personnel and free agent receiver Antwaan Randle El, defensive end Andre Carter, safety Adam Archuleta and quarterback Todd Collins to dinner and the Washington Wizards-Detroit Pistons game.

Owner Daniel Snyder, Coach Joe Gibbs, player personnel director Vinny Cerrato, offensive coordinator Don Breaux, assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams and H-back Chris Cooley were joined by Carter, Archuleta and Collins. It was believed that Randle El was also in the limousine. Cooley is represented by Gary Wichard, Archuleta's agent.

Earlier in the day, tight end Robert Royal signed a five-year deal with Buffalo worth a maximum of $10 million, according to league sources. A few hours later, the Redskins completed a deal with San Francisco that sent a third-round draft pick this year and a fourth-rounder in 2007 for the 24-year-old Lloyd, who has a flair for making acrobatic catches and set career highs in catches and yardage last season.

The Redskins are accustomed to making a splash at the start of free agency and Snyder is also known for finding ways to keep players from leaving Washington without a contract, often by spending lavishly on their signing bonuses.

Should the Redskins sign all four players, they will have addressed nearly all of their needs in one fell swoop, and could utilize the draft or lesser free agents to add depth at tight end, linebacker, cornerback and along the offensive line.

Even with the addition of Lloyd, Randle El would greatly enhance Washington's passing game, which relied largely on Pro Bowl wideout Santana Moss last season. Randle El's agent, Fletcher Smith, said yesterday that he received a contract offer from the Chicago Bears early yesterday morning, but that the Redskins were the first team his client would visit.

At the end of a long night, Smith was asked if Randle El's status had changed. "His status hasn't changed at all," he said. "This was more of a get-to-know-you sort of night, and we'll meet again in the morning."

The versatile receiver, who is an excellent return specialist and was a dynamic college quarterback, helped Pittsburgh win the Super Bowl last month and is expected to command a salary worth roughly $5 million a year, according to league sources, with a signing bonus surpassing $10 million. Should Randle El sign elsewhere, the Redskins would give strong consideration to free agent David Givens (New England).

The Redskins have long sought a prolific pass rusher to aid their already stout defense, and Carter, the seventh overall pick by San Francisco in 2001, would fill that role. He posted 12½ sacks in his second NFL season, can also play linebacker in a 3-4 system and, at age 26, could be entering his prime. His father, Rubin, is a former position coach with Washington, and is now head coach at Florida A&M.

Archuleta plays with the physical edge Washington's staff demands, and was an immediate target as well. Starting free safety Sean Taylor could face a three-year mandatory minimum sentence for felony assault charges -- his trial is scheduled for April 10 -- and Ryan Clark, the Redskins' starting strong safety, is scheduled to visit several teams after becoming a free agent yesterday.

Archuleta's agent, Gary Wichard, said the safety has trips planned to other teams, and that he did not expect a decision to be made for several days. Clark's agent, Joel Turner, said he would give the Redskins a chance to match any offer, but suspects the sides could end up parting ways.

Collins is a 10-year veteran who is already well versed in the system of Al Saunders, Washington's new associate head coach-offense. Collins played for Saunders in Kansas City and would serve as insurance behind starter Mark Brunell and rookie backup Jason Campbell. The Redskins are also continuing talks to trade quarterback Patrick Ramsey. Collins was vacationing in the Caribbean, but Snyder sent a plane to pick him up, according to his agent, Brad Blank.

Redskins Notes: Negotiations with Royal had hit a stalemate by midweek, but team officials called Royal's agent late Friday night for a final session, according to a source. The sides remained far apart, however.

With Royal's departure, the Redskins, who are in the market for a more blocking-oriented tight end, according to league sources, expressed some interest in Dallas's Dan Campbell, and could also make a move for Justin Peelle (San Diego) or Marcellus Rivers (Houston) among others. . . .

Former Redskin linebacker LaVar Arrington was scheduled to meet with the New York Giants yesterday and today, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Arrington met with Miami Dolphins officials Friday.

Kil--

complimentary Wr's are what the redskins were in major need of.... The backfield is solid, the line is solid, TE's need a blocking type, Brunell is average but smart (that is all that gibbs needs) but beyond moss the WR's were garbage....

I would rather grab WR's from FA than through the draft... we all know that WR's take about 3 years to blossom... Why take on a project WR when you were in the Divisional round of th playoffs last year...???

Llyod is 24 years old and Randle-el has pedigree (winning organization) plus we need a PR/KR

I would take these two guys over Owens all day... So to throw out the typical Snyder being Snyder doesn't make sense... b/c if Snyder was being Snyder he would have brought in Owens...

The offense held this team back last year... so they added a new OC and some WR's.. I would say that is a good offseason so far....

Skins need to address their secondary ESP if they don't re-sign Clark (I'm not worried bout Taylors future, he'll beat those BOGUS charges)..

Achuletta isn't a guy id prefer, but is doable in Williams defense. I think his best years are behind him, and igf he can be half od what John Lynch is... I'd be happy

Andre Carter is another guy who I think can be productive in the Defensive system, and comes ALOT cheaper then Abraham.. he is a better DE, but is capable of dropping into coverage in a zone blitz type scheme

We need depth at OLINE depth, blocking TE, and depth at linebacker and cornerback.

Brandon Lloyd for a 3rd round pick this year and a 4th next year? should have been a 2nd this year and a 5th next year. As a Niner fan I can't help but think that we could have gotten more.

Sure, we need the draft picks, but a 3rd & 4th rounder? Stud WRs seem to be few & far beween these days, and I would have rather kept Lloyd than give him up for this.

This gives the Niners an extra 3rd rounder this season, and I'm having a very hard time seeing how that will replace Lloyd's talent at WR anytime soon. Let's see, i think we still have Arnez Battle?

And Rashaun Woods, who they spent a first on just a couple years ago. Woods hasn't proven anything yet, but he is still there and they used a 31st overall pick on him.

The Randle-El deal was what, 30 mil over 6 years? The Skins are going nuts with their checkbook like usual.

Wash Post online:

The Redskins, according to a league source, are close to signing Fauria, an 11-year veteran who spent the last four seasons with New England. After being signed as an undrafted free agent in 1997, Fauria spent his first seven seasons in Seattle. He played on two Super Bowl teams with the Patriots, and became expendable as the Patriots are developing two young tight ends, Daniel Graham and Benjamin Watson. Fauria has 245 career catches for 2,473 yards and 20 receiving touchdowns. Last season, playing behind both Watson and Graham, Fauria caught eight passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

alright portis, a question:

what does the signing of randal el and trading for lloyd do for chris cooley's stock? he was one of the hottest TE's last year the last few weeks. he seemed to have find his place in the offense. is he still a possible top 5 TE this year?

I think he can be a top 7 TE - I still see him as the main Red Zone threat... and with the speed of Lloyd, and Moss - it should take away the safties biting down on him... I dont see too much of a drop, but more weapons on offense , may also mean ALOT more plays to run - alot more opportunities...

to take the pressure off of Santana.

They have done well to get Lloyd

Mike Reiss

3/12/2006

The Washington Redskins announced that they have signed tight end Christian Fauria to a contract. Terms were undisclosed.

Fauria served as the Patriots' third tight end in 2005. He spent the last four seasons with the club, never missing a game. The Redskins pounced on him quickly after losing Robert Royal to the Bills on the first day of free agency.

Fauria is the second Patriots player to sign with another team on Sunday, following receiver Andre' Davis (Bills).

Fauria had eight catches for 57 yards in 2005, both career lows. But part of that was the fact he was playing behind Daniel Graham and Benjamin Watson.

The Patriots still have Graham and Watson under contract for 2006.
