I would like them to wait until the 2nd round for a TE. The position seems deep and jeez, they have never used the position much in the past (chicken or the egg?). I would not mind an OT taken, but I do not think that will happen. I would like a CB taken. With Azumah gone, they need help there. Not sure which guy will likely be available.

Tye Hill and Antonio Cromartie are possibilities. Cromartie would be a great pick...potential stud corner without having to be rushed into anything more than a nickle CB. I think it's a good situation for both sides.

Anyone know much about Cromartie? I've read he's an exciting player, but the knee injury he had last year gave his future some uncertainty. Supposedly he ran a great 40 time at his pro day and settled a lot of the injury concerns.

you guys will most likely take cb or te in round 1. both are dire needs and both positions will most likely have good values when you pick at 26.

i'm guessing pope or hill.

cromartie has a higher ceiling but he's going to be a project--boom or bust type of guy.

The more I think about it, the more I want a CB in round 1. If we could get Tye Hill, that would be perfect and then follow up with TE Fasano in round 2. Hill is small, but has exceptional speed. With Azumah's retiremnt, the position lacks depth and Tillman needs to step up after getting burned often last year.

With fasano, he's from Notre Dame, so he has a local attachment and also has a great work ethic. Seems like a solid player to add.

Oline depth / youth is more of a long term need. I would wait until day 2 to grab a couple. 3rd round should be another WR. The 4th spot needs a boost. Not a Gage fan and Currie is an unknown with potential at this point.

1. CB

2. TE

3. WR

4. OL

5. LB

6. OL

7. S

I would really like Walter's idea if that were the Bears' draft. I also wouldn't be disappointed if they took O-line in one of the first two rounds...if the value is there. I also wouldn't mind if they spent their first round pick if a game-breaking WR slipped to them. I really like Tye Hill though after his Senior Bowl week. He seemed to shut anyone he covered down. I would like it if Tillman could become the nickel.

Yeah I agree with Walter. I was never high on them drafting a TE and the more I think about it the less I like it. I would rather see them draft another WR before a TE.

I want a CB or even a Safety in the first.

Over all I want them to just go with value.

I can't stand Gage. Both of the last two years he was talked up leading to training camp, but in reality he's big, slow, and just doesn't produce. Our WR corp is this:

Muhammad - He will make the tough catch, but drops a lot of easy catches. Our surefire #1 WR, but I'm not a big fan of him. Showboats too much.

Bradley - Coming off an ACL tear. Showed very good potential last year before getting hurt. If he's fully recovered, I think he's definitely our #2 WR with a nice set of skills. Pretty impressive given I had never even heard of him before he was drafted.

Berrian - Tons of speed and has potential. Was impressive in the playoff game, but is always getting banged up and doesn't appear to be reliable in the health department.

Gage - Tall, but slow and unproductive.

Currie - Another fast guy with potential, but missed all of his rookie season with an injury.

So basically our only surefire guy is Muhammad and everyone else is a question mark. I would really love to see what Bradley and Berrian can do, but we can't handle the WR position like we've handled the QB position the last couple years...hoping these guys with "promise" turn out to be something. I wouldn't argue with a WR on the first day at all, no matter what round.

I definitely agree with your TE comments. Vernon Davis is quite a bit above everyone else on the draft board, but is there really much separating Pope/Byrd/Fasano/Lewis/etc?

muhammed's stats of last year are closer to his career norm than were his 2004 stats. he's a valuable football player, but the bears definitely overpaid and bought him high. he's surefire only in the sense he'll be on the bears roster. but his age, past injury history, and erratic performances make him anything but "surefire."

for perspective, he only had 400 yards and 3 tds more than mike williams (about 25 yards per game)--a rookie buried on the depth chart in detroit and out of football for nearly two years.

food for thought.

Yup, we definitely overpaid and there's no question about it. It was almost a PR signing just so they didn't have to listen to the fans complain about the WR position. However, given we had a gaping hole at WR last year and given who else was available, I think they made the right choice in terms of player.

i agree. just pointing out a couple of things.

I think we should draft the best TE available in the first round, mainly because we did NOT do anything via free agency to address our WR situation. We have Moose (who in my opinion, isn't an awesome #1 WR. At 32, he be a great #2 guy). I don't like Gage, and I think he loses his #2 job at WR in camp. We are crossing our fingers that Bradley and Berrian turn out to be good or even great. They have alot of potential, but just haven't played much. I like the both of them, but there's potential that one of them might be just decent or a bust.

Taking a TE that can catch the ball well will help improve the passing game. We need that given our WR situation. I think that by re-signing John Gilmore and Gabe Reid this offseason, it's prep work to dismiss Desmond Clark and draft a TE. If that's the case, get the best guy out there and nab him in the first round. My pipe dream....Vernon Davis. Just wish we could actually have a chance to get him.

We do NOT have a 3rd round pick this year, so we better make sure of what we need to address in the 2nd round. At this time, I would agree with taking a CB in round 2.

Where did our 3rd round pick go? I thought we had all of them.

Yea, I think we lost the 3rd rounder last year for Ogun...when we traded Booker. I think we still own the 3rd rounder this year.

Also, if we lose a starting CB to injury this year, it would be devastating with no viable backup. If we dont get a good TE, its not the end of the world.

I agree that the passing game needs another player or two, but CB is most critical to address imo.

Completely agree. There isn't a viable CB on the team after Vasher and Tillman.

Same thing at Safety. I liked what C Harris did last year but he was banged up at then end and of course Brown was not healthy all year.

CB or Safety would be great by me.

There has been some talk about Bears going CB and letting them battle with Tillman or moving Tillman to Safety.

If we don't have a 3rd then I think they have to go CB and WR on day 1.

If the value in the 2nd round is TE and not WR then draft a TE, I just don't like the Bears draft history when they go into it looking to fill a need.

I heard some one quote Urlacher the other day that he calls Briggs "The Franchise"

Seems to me they have to lock him up. Every thing I have heard is that they will.

i agree with your assessment on the WR's...

I would put the priority as follows

1) top tier TE only (if top tier is gone then go for value pick)

2) CB

3) OL/WR

4) WR/OL

5) value

just reporting what they said. i wish i had the link handy...they were talking about the bears not having two huge contracts at linebacker...how a number of other guys are coming due for a payday after 2007, blah, blah, blah.

they further said the bears feel like it could be a bumpy negotiations because briggs is a rosenhaus client (?) and brought up how he screwed the bears in the kearse deal (got the bears to inflate the market and then got his client signed in philly, where he wanted to go the whole time).

who knows what is or isn't true...but i don't think it's a slamdunk the bears can sign briggs even if they want to.

This to me is the most important move they can make this off season, moreso than drafting or signing anyone new. For some reason, most teams get locked into a mindset of x dollars per position and that money spent at other spots is more important. C and LT are where the money should go on the oline. CB and DE is where the money should go on D.

Having both Briggs and Urlacher is a large part of what made the D so solid. It created matchup problems for offences and gave them sideline to sideline coverage. The effect of losing one would be felt.

Anyway - nothing to worry about now. It will happen or it wont and for now, we have both.

I wish I could remember which site I saw this on, but I actually saw a mock with the Bears getting Jimmy Williams in the 1st. Has his stock dropped that much? I would be thrilled if that happened.

can't see that happening. jimmy falls no lower than the mid-teens. there's even talk of the lions taking him at 9.
