remote controller 143 Posted May 12, 2006 -- Kitna's Job to Lose -- Fri May 12, 2006 --from FFMastermind.com Mlive.com reports new Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna is separating himself in the workouts already in the race for the starting job. It’s Kitna’s job to lose. QB Josh McCown is not the solid No.2 either – QB Dan Orlovsky is giving him a run for his money. This is the right move to start this season. Kitna is the type of guy who will translate what Marinelli is trying to accomplish, to the field of play. McCown will take over at some point, but will benefit from watching Kitna for awhile. famousb 11 Posted May 12, 2006 I can't really seem to believe that McCown had any real chance of winning the starting job w/ Kitna on board. McCown had to be more of a "just in case" pickup... Kitna has proven he's a very competent QB everywhere he's been. He just had the unfortunate circumstance of having a Heisman trophy-winning QB being brought in to be the team's savoir in Cincy - where he was doing a very good job w/ a young CJ and other supporters that weren't as good as the ones there now... if Marinelli & Co. have any competence at all, and the Oline can start figuring out that the guys in different jerseys aren't supposed to be able to get to the QB, then Kitna should be able to have a decent season, and i'd be happy to take a flyer on him as a 2nd QB... Mack 1 6 Posted May 12, 2006 Wow, a career back-up QB to captain the Lions' perennial sinking ship. How appropriate.
famousb 11 Posted May 12, 2006 Wow, a career back-up QB to captain the Lions' perennial sinking ship. How appropriate. Kitna may not be a HOFer, but he's better than a few of the starting QBs out there for other teams. If you break down his career stats, it is a decent picture. games: 92 comps: 18.11 att: 30.84 pct: 58.8 yds: 198.47 td: 1.17 int: 1.13 but then if you take just his last 2 years in SEA and first two in CIN - where he was the clear-cut starter, and not just coming in for a few plays, or filling in for injury. The stats aren't that much better, but i believe it is a clearer picture.... games: 76 comps: 1460 (19.21) att: 2487 (32.72) pct: 58.70 yds: 210.38 td: 95 (1.25) int: 88 (1.16) 16 of these games were his 2001 campaign in Cincy when the team was still dismal.... much like the Lions are right now. Granted, his career high tds is only 26. But if he can even get into the 20s w/ DET this year, it will be a step in the right direction as Joey's high was only 19... swamp dog 0 Posted May 12, 2006 orlovsky has been my darkhorse candidate to be the lions qb sometime during the season. going into his senior year in college he was highly rated. he's a bit of an unknown right now, of course, but he seems to possess the tools of a martz qb. and no, i'm not predicting anything for him other than he's a legitimate darkhorse candidate who has potential to make some noise before it's all said and done. that aside, kitna's solid enough to do well and not have the qb position be a liability. Entering his senior year, he ranked by many as the best QB in the nation. He had a very disappointing senior year tho.
swamp dog 0 Posted May 12, 2006 killer clarifies his comment about orlovsky to a reader in his mlive weblog (www.mlive.com): "Tom, could you please clarify your comment on Dan-O giving McCown a run for the #2 spot? Does it mean McCown has not practised well, or has Dan-O progressed so much, that perhaps Millen drafted a diamond in the rough? Tom Kowalski: rick ... what the players are telling me is that orlovsky has looked pretty good -- this is coming from the players, not the coaches, so i don't know what martz is thinking ... martz has refused all interview requests and might not talk until training camp in late July..." because martz isn't talking, this is all speculation--from kitna right on through to orlovsky. Like I said, Kitna is a back-up QB in the NFL. Sure a team can win with him, but it would need to be strong in other areas for that to happen, and we all know the Lions don't fit that description. So if you want a QB to prop up under center and win a couple games for you, then I guess he's your man. But if you want a QB to put a team on his shoulders and help his team battle for conference supremacy, then the Lions are in deep doo-doo 'cause they don't have that kind of player at the QB position on their roster.
