Strike 5,547 Posted May 15, 2006 Fresh on the heels of the city of Herndon, VA ousting most of it's city council for creating an illegal alien day labor center comes the story of Tom Osborne, legendary football coach and Congressman, losing his bid for the GOP nomination for governor of Nebraska. One of the main issues that caused his demise was his support of a bill to allow illegals in Nebraska to pay in state tuition for college. http://www.boston.com/news/politics/govern...orne_challenge/ Yeah, politicians, keep supporting the illegals and ignoring what your constituents want...... Voltaire 5,316 Posted May 15, 2006 One of the main issues that caused his demise was his support of a bill to allow illegals in Nebraska to pay in state tuition for college. What a dumb f*cking idea. Nebraska taxpayers will subsidize illegals at the same rate as nebraska residents. Better than they would Missourians, New Yorkers or anybody else. Unreal. Osbourne gets what he deserves there for putting his neck on the line on that one. I hated Tom Osbourne and his criminally tinged football team. But I understand Nebraskans loving him... the same as San Fransico and Barry Bonds or me with Bill Laimbeer.

That wasn't really the reason he lost, but it didn't help. His problem stemmed from not having a purpose for being gov., a strong incumbant that was a Republican-and was well liked in the west, and his horrible position on our education fight. I love Tom and nice cheap shot on the football team, which 99.5% were not criminals. But I was just as happy as you that he lost, if for different reasons. Giving illegals in state tuition is the in thing. Some other states, not sure how many, already do it. But it is stupid. What's amazing about this story is that Osborne has never gotten less than 82% of the vote in his runs for congress but he got spanked in this race, largely due to this issue. This should be a hint to other politicians regarding how people feel about this issue. That wasn't really the reason he lost, but it didn't help. The incumbent wasn't elected but elevated to that post. When Osborne announced his candidacy 18 months ago polls showed him a 2-1 favorite, so the election was his to lose. Certainly he made other missteps and the governor showed he was competent despite not having been elected, but you cannot discount the importance of this issue in the election. torridjoe 48 Posted May 15, 2006 Heineman vetoed a bill allowing children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at public colleges and universities. Osborne supported the idea. I assume the reporter means the ILLEGAL children of illegal immigrants, since they'd have a tough case to make that US citizens and residents of Nebraska shouldn't be eligible for in-state tuition. Jeff Garcia 8 Posted May 15, 2006 The same thing is happening to Bush. I think that after his speech tonight, we'll see his approval ratings go up. Nothing earth shattering, but how much lower can they really go? They'll go up after tonight.

People who no longer trust him aren't simply going to decide, "yeah, I trust him again now after that speech."
Strike 5,547 Posted May 15, 2006 The same thing is happening to Bush. I think that after his speech tonight, we'll see his approval ratings go up. Nothing earth shattering, but how much lower can they really go? They'll go up after tonight. If people do their research it won't matter. Points of fact: 1) The national guard cannot do enforcement on the border. BTW, they already help the border patrol out in an support and administrative capacity, which is almost definitely what the new national guardsmen being deployed will do. This will have a minimal effect on actual enforcement. 2) The numbers we're talking about are miniscule compared to what is needed. 3) As Muhammad mentions, noone trusts Bush, especially when it comes to immigration. We all know his ultimate goal is to grant amnesty to the illegals that are here and allow the border to be open under the guise of a guest worker program. Nothing he says now is going to change any intelligent person's opinion about his stance on immigration.
