Without the steps we took they would not be our partners. Took amazing grace, courage and leadership to do this. With regard to Japan, a ton of the credit has to go to Douglas MacArthur. For nearly 5 years he was the absolute ruler of Japan. A political conservative and a fierce opponent of the New Deal, MacArthur could have created a nation like Calvin Coolidge’s America. Or he could have created another autocracy. Or he could have executed the emperor. He could have severely punished Japan as our state department (and most of our public) desired. Instead he imposed a modern liberal democracy, complete with collective rights for unions, public education, and land reform. And he saved the emperor though made the position symbolic, much like England’s royalty. He created modern Japan and cemented one of our greatest allies. This might have been MacArthur’s finest achievement.

Gotta assume we were just guilty about the whole Godzirra thing. But they were awful frigginpeople. I mean, barbaric. Made the Nazis look like Bobby Flay.
