Deep WR sleeper that no one is thinking about

Recommended Posts

Call me crazy, but for some reason, I think Jabar Gaffney is going to surprise people. Never really had a chance to shine in Houston. That offense is death for WRs.

Now, he's in Philadelphia (a pass-happy offense) and in his 5th year in the league. Any word around town from Philadelphia about him?

Anyone else thinks he's worth a late round grab?

No. He had countless oppurtunities to 'shine' in Houston but I can remember many drop passes. LJ Smith & Reggie Brown all season long in Philly.

Yup, there's a reason nobody is thinking about him.

I think he has an opportunity to put up decent numbers in a pass happy offense. Outside of Westy (and obviously McNabb) no one in that offense really jumps out at you as far as big numbers are concerned. LJ is talented enough that he could definetly take it to the next level. Lewis and Pinky are what they are and neither will have much fantasy impact. As for Reggie I really like him and think he'll be productive but I think expectations for his second year maybe a little too high. He maybe seeing #1 CBs and he's still learning the game so it could be another year before he really makes his big leap. As for Gaffney, he was in a stagnant offense in Houston so this is a different world for him. By no means would I reach for him but if he's there in those later rounds he definetly has sleeper potential.

Exactly my thinking, Boston.

Definitely wouldn't reach for him. Possible last round selection or pick him up on the waiver wire if he does anything in preseason.

People in Philadelphia aren't too enthusiastic about him. I happen to think he's a nice addition, but I don't expect him to surpass Reggie Brown as the teams top receiver. He may not even begin the season ahead of Pinkston on the depth chart, but we'll figure that out in the preseason.

With Reggie Brown as the #1WR, L.J. Smith at TE and Brian Westbrook catching 70 receptions himself, I would say Gaffney has a limited upside this year. He might be worth holding a bench spot, but if has more value than that he'll have to start finding the endzone more often because I can't see him having more than 650-750 yards receiving this season.

He'll first have to secure himself a starting position over Todd Pinkston. Then he'll also have to establish himself as a more frequant target than Reggie Brown, Brian Westbrook and L.J. Smith. He should play well within the offense, but I think there's too many other factors in the way for him to emerge as a quality fantasy receiver this season.

If he locks up the starting spot by opening day I may see more upside to him.

dont forget that westbrook eats up receptions just like a #1 WR. so now you have 3 WR's above gaffney. its a no go.

Pinkston's still an Eagle. He missed all of last season, but he'll be back this year.

I agree. I picked him up in a dynasty auction league cheap, and we start 4 WRs, so yeah, I'll take a flyer on him. I think he could have value in a deeper league, but for your standard 12 team start 2 WR league, he is a bit of a reach. :shocking:

For some odd reason, I think Justin Jenkins comes to camp this year, entrenches himself at the #4 receiver, and eventually blossoms this year and it productive.

Just a gut feeling, and my gut is not small. :first:

Cedric Wilson, Steelers. Someone's gotta play opposite of Hines Ward, and with the departure of ARE, he should be the opening day starter.

Methinks the success of the passing game in last year's AFC playoffs is gonna spill over into this season. Wilson gets off the LOS, runs good routes, possesses great quickness, and has ability after the catch. I am unsure about his hands, but from what limited action I've seen, he appears to be solid.

He's coming into his prime, he should finally get his shot (I don't foresee Holmes starting as a rookie), and he's talented enough to get the job done.

he's probably the only player i have ever seen get untouched on a reverse and still fumble walking in the endzone for a touch back

anyone remember that game?

funny play for sure

i see Brown, LJ, and Pinkston the main benefactors in Philly, Gaffney is a long shot to do anything barring injuries among WRs

Rashaun Woods. He was very talented coming out of OK State, and never had a chance because of injuries in SF. He could rebound with have a shot with a shoddy WR core in front of him in SD

That still doesn't beat Plexico spiking the ball after a 10 yard catch when he was untouched and having the deffender running it back for a td.

Holmes will be the starter sooner than you think. This guy runs great routes and has outstanding hands with good speed to boot. He is a good everydown blocker, and a good return man. I am not sure what happened with Holmes' in the past few months and his two skirmishes with the law? It really surprised me. I know the mother of his kid has asked to drop the charges and said from the get go that she was not scared of Santonio if that helps at all?? Maybe she was not tellling the whole truth, or this was just a one time thing??? I am not excusing Santonio at all, but when he was at Ohio State, he was never an off the field problem, was well mannered and well spoken, one of the few players Tressell would let speak to the press on a regular basis. He also was a major team guy laying out tons of nice blocks for the runningbacks and well liked by his teammates and coaches.

I think Cowher's gonna ease him into the offense by putting him in the slot. Wilson's got more polish than Holmes right now, and that's what you really need for someone playing opposite Hines Ward.

No doubt that Holmes can be a stud.

Really? I'm a season ticket/PSL holder, been to every game, and I have every game on Tivo. Gaffney had the best hands on the team aside from maybe Armstrong. People point to one play from last year and cling to it like it's all that ever happened. Not accurate.

I've said for a while that Gaffney is a better WR than people give him credit for. However, it's all relative. We're talking about a #2-caliber WR here. Of course, Philly may very well have nothing but #2-caliver WRs on their team, which means Gaffney has a shot at the #1 gig. It's kind of like being the #1 WR in KC, isn't it? LJ Smith and Westbrook are the true threats on that team.

The Texans primary problem was the coaching staff and their inability to agree on a scheme or even consistently call a game. Oh, and the porous pass protection probably had some effect as well <_< . Gaffney will surprise some people in Philly. In 2004 (the team's best season), Gaffney had more YPC than either of the team's deep threats (AJ and Bradford) and a much higher catch-to-target ratio than either AJ or Bradford. He also had a much higher third down cacth percentage than anyone on the team. When he's been targeted, he's been very productive. And contrary to Rookie QB's statement, he has very good hands.

I like Drew Carter and he would have been a great one if not for Meshawn signing.

I'm going with Samie Parker as my sleeper this year. Everything about his situation screams breakout year. They need a wr to step up and become the go to guy (Kennison is not that guy), Parker is lightning fast, he's in his third year. This will be the year that KC finally has a legit fantasy stud at wr.
