Mr. Tony Gonzalez

Recommended Posts

Obviously Gates is #1 this year.

But through many mock drafts, I've always seen Shockey before Gonzo, sometimes even Heap, Witten or COOLEY before Gonzo.

Is everyone right? Has Tony given everything he's got? Is he done? Or is he the TE steal this year?

i think Gonzo will probably end up as the #2 TE at season's end. but i wouldn't be surprised if someone from this group: Shockey, Witten, Heap, Cooley finished ahead of him. Gonzo is consistant and usually injury (sginificant injury that is) free. to me, he should be the 2nd TE taken. however, i most likely will wait it out and just grab a TE later and land one of the other guys.

Gonzo struggled early last year but check out his stats once Willie Roaf returned. Gonzo had to pass protect alot, once Roaf came back he was let loose.

I think the new OC and HC will benefit Gonzo. They've already said they'd like to look for him more near the endzone, which will hopefully spell more TDs.

Also, the Chiefs are making a push to resign both Gonzo and Kawika Mitchell. Not sure but I think they become FAs after this season, so that also might effect his production if a deal isnt reached before this season begins.

Contract Details

On September 13, 2002, the Chiefs signed Gonzo to a seven-year contract worth $31.5 million. It included a $10 million signing bonus, according to the Associated Press.

I don't know what the details are, but it's been in the papers, posted on chiefsplanet and in other news that the Chiefs front office would like to go ahead and lock up Gonzalez and Kawika Mitchell. I'm just not exactly sure when their contracts are up.

it could have been a 5 yr contract, with options on the last 2 years or something along those lines...

I think Gonzo will have a big year. The new emphasis on the run game should give Gonzalez an easier time getting open. Vermeil use to spread things out, defenses had to spread out as well and as a result they were in position to stop Gonzalez a bit more.

Now defenses will have to defend against a power running game. More men will be up in the box, which means Gonzalez can slip behind defenders a bit easier and beat them deep or just run an out and be open. His YPR may go up a bit and in the redzone teams won't know wether to stop LJ or Gonzo. He should have at least 6 TDs this season.

I think he could have someting like 80/950/8.

from PFW...

Chiefs fans should not to get too worried with the news that perennial Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez reached incentives in his current contract (covering five years and $25 million) that allow him to void the final two years of the deal and become a free agent after 2006. Talks between the two sides have been ongoing since June, and a new pact that should allow Gonzalez to retire as a Chief will likely be reached before the season opener, according to our sources.

People seem to forget that Gonzo had surgery on his foot before the 05 season. During training camp last year, he was complaining about lingering soreness. Combined with more blocking assignments while Roaf was out, it added up to a down year. Assuming he and the Chiefs tackles stay healthy, I like a rebound season for Gonzo.

I think this year will go:

Gates

Shockey

TG

Heap

Gonzalez won't have to stay in to block as much, and this will greatly increase his fantasy numbers. Also, teams are going to be gearing up to stop Larry Johnson, leaving TG one on one with a linebacker. I'll take Tony Gonzalez all day in that matchup.

I think you're overreacting to anomalies.

ADP Gonzo (5.9)

Shockey (5.2), Heap (6.2), Crumpler (6.12)

I have 100 'select' mock drafts sorted in a spreadsheet. It's an experimental project to create a better ADP.

I have not seen Witten or Cooley drafted before Gonzo.

Shockey 78 times. So, Gonzo went before him 22 times.

Heap 6 times.

Crumpler once.
