Depth at QB

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to put this list out there so that it's easier to see how much QB talent is available.

There are quality QBs to be had in the 10th round!

I have BOLDED some guys that I'll look for in my draft:

QB:

1. Peyton Manning QB IND 2.04

2. Carson Palmer QB CIN 4.07

3. Tom Brady QB NEP 4.11

4. Matt Hasselb QB SEA 5.08

5. Donvn McNabb QB PHI 6.01 - PHI is still a pass first offense. McNabb was still VERY good before T.O.

6. Eli Manning QB NYG 6.04 - getting better every year. Has a complete team around him now; NYG's offense should be explosive again.

7. Marc Bulger QB STL 6.06

8. Daunte Culpe QB MIA 7.02 - once part of the BIG 3 and in many leagues still outscored Manning in the 49TD season. Worth a shot this late.

9. Jake Delhom QB CAR 7.06

10. Drew Bledsoe QB DAL 7.07 - great surrounding cast.

11. Kurt Warner QB ARI 8.01

12. Trent Green QB KCC 8.09

13. Michael Vick QB ATL 8.12 - finally, the Vick hype machine has died down. I'll take a chance on him in the late 8th.

14. Jake Plummer QB DEN 9.04

15. Aaron Brooks QB OAK 9.11 - no, Brooks isn't a great NFL QB, but just like Collins last year, you've got to like whoever is throwing to OAK's WRs.

16. Drew Brees QB NOS 10.01 - destined to become the poster boy for "no respect" in fantasy?

17. Brett Favre QB GBP 10.05

18. Ben Roethl QB PIT 10.08

19. Steve McNair QB BAL 11.03 - seriously. What's not to like about McNair with Heap and Mason as targets?

20. Byron Leftwich QB JAC 11.03

21. David Carr QB HOU 11.12

22. Jon Kitna QB DET 12.04

23. Chris Simms QB TBB 12.05

24. Philip Rivers QB SDC 13.02

25. Mark Brunell QB WAS 13.08

26. Billy Volek QB TEN 13.10

27. Brad Johnson QB MIN 14.03

28. Matt Leinart QB ARI 15.01

29. Vince Young QB TEN 15.06

30. Rex GrossmanQB CHI 15.12.

31. Charlie Frye QB CLE 16.01

32. Alex Smith QB SFO 16.09

33. Josh McCown QB DET 16.09

34. Chad PenningtonQB NYJ 18.04

35. Matt Schaub QB ATL 19.02

While I don't quite agree with the QBs you selected (mainly Vick), I do agree that the depth is unreal this year. Actually...is is depth or the fact that noone really stands out?

Outside of Manning "the stat ######", Palmer "the broken, or Bradey "the ordinary" there is very little difference (fantasy-wise) on QBs this year. In fact there is very little difference between the 4 spot and the 15th spot in some cases.

I pick 8 in a 10-man redraft league that starts one QB (4 pt pass TDs). I will wait to see when other managers start taking back up QBs. So, I am actually contemplateing not picking a QB until at least round 7 or 8. personally...RB depth is low this year and QB depth is high...I would much rather take a flyer on a RB in the mid rounds and take Warner or Farve , then have a top 7 QB with not RB prospects.

This is somewhat of an exagerration, but with a lot of truth to it IMO:

Tier 1:

Manning

Palmer

Tier 2

Everyone else.

Even so... Maning has lost a key ingredient to his offense in Edge...and Palmer is hurt. So...they may all be tier 2 QBs when all is said and done.

I disagree . . .

You have questions with 2,5,6,8 and 10

Manning and Hasslebeck are the only "locks" this year . . .

2) Palmer - yo uhave NO idea if he will be ready for the start of the season . . .

3) Brady - stats were higher than normal last year because

a) NE's defense in the first half of the year was horrible, so there was no running the ball late to protect the lead . . .

 Dillon was banged up all year; therefore the Pats weren't really able to run the ball, so they ended up passing more . . .

5) McNabb got great FF numbers before TO primarily due to his rushing totals . . . I don't think that he will run like he did a few years ago (his rushing numbers have been on the decline)

6) Eli completed only 52 percent of his passes, so I don't think he's getting better . . .

8) Culpeeper - see #2

10) Bledsoe was great last year until his Oline (Adams, specifically) fell apart, is the OL any better this year??

CONCLUSION: Grab Manning or Hasslebeck; the rest is a jumbled mess . . .

a "Tier 1" player should have no injury issues; move Palmer down and Hasslebeck up . . .

I wouldn't move Palmer down. It is his non plant leg correct? I am just not that concerned with it and think it won't take him long to get back into the swing.

That being said... I completely boned out in forgetting to add Hasselback to the first tier.

I would go with the words "parity" and "mediocrity" over depth. The QB position just doesn't excite me at all this year. Blegh.

Yet another great year to run the QBBC approach..

Draft 2 or 3 guys whose schedules overlap in such a way that you will find yourself with an terribly good match-up for most of the games of the season.

Plummer-Warner

Warner-Green

Plummer-Green

At least one of these duos will probably be available to be drafted in rounds 7 & 8 gives you an excellent baseline that guarantees at least 10 games against pass defenses that I project to finish in among the worst in the league. Although... I had originally included the Chiefs among these teams, and now the Ty Law signing now has me wavering.

If you draft a QB in the first 6 rounds this year, then you are a certified moron...in my humble opinion :(

What will be funny in my league is that most people will go this route. We have a pretty knowledgable group of managers...and I can see it now. Round 8 comes around...someone takes Hasselebeck (Manning should be gone)...and then the only QB run happens.

For anyone who's interested, here's a link to my fantasy quarterbacks piece. I feel fairly strongly that this year's crop will be very top heavy. It's likely that you can pick up your largest margin at the quarterback position. I analyze and draft positions (rather than players) based on where I think I can gain the largest margins over my opponents (for example, there's a huge margin at TE between Gates and the next best...or Gates, Gonzolez and the next best). Winning is about achieving that highest possible point total, so it's not always in your best interest to draft players based on the total number of points they'll bring to the table.

I think this seems awfully redundant to most fantasy players...but I believe that many stray from this philosophy when they actually draft.

there are already reports that Carson will be out until Week6; again, why choose him over Hasslebeck when there is a chance you wont have him for 1/3 of your season??

I actually plan to target Aaron Brooks, Drew Bledsoe, Kurt Warner, Steve McNair and Kitna between rounds 8-12. I will spend 3 of those 5 picks at QB. I feel very very confident that 1 of those QBs will finish in the top 5 and that 3 will finish in the top 10. At worst, I should have a solid platoon. What do you think the likelihood of me getting a top 20 back in the 9th round is?
