Da Bomb 0 Posted July 27, 2006 we are seeing guys go on this list left and right. braylon edwards, curtis martin, thomas jones, etc etc. what does it actaully mean? are they out for like 6 or 8 weeks? is it just like a fantasy IR spot that opens up a roster spot for someone else? or whats the deal here? Parja 0 Posted July 27, 2006 In the preseason, it means a couple of things. The guy can't work out with the team and it frees up a roster spot. The team can take him off the list at any time before the start of the season. Once the season starts, anyone on the list is stuck on there until after Week 6. After week 8 (not entirely sure of this date), the team either has to activate him or put him on the IR.
soggy™ 0 Posted July 27, 2006 Teams can place players rehabbing injuries on the PUP list prior to the start of training camp, and at any point during training camp the player can pass his physical and return to action. Because the team placed him on PUP prior to the start of training camp, if the player needs further time to recover from an injury when the regular season begins and rosters are trimmed to 53, the team has the option to place the player on the PUP list at the beginning of the regular season and avoid using a roster spot. If a player begins the regular season on the PUP list, he must remain on the PUP list for at least the first six weeks of the regular season before a three-to-six week window opens when the player can begin practicing and eventually be activated to the53-man roster, if he's healthy, or placed on injured-reserve. At that point the team then decides if he's returning to the roster or being placed on IR.
Da Bomb 0 Posted July 27, 2006 so some of these guys on the PUP list right now (like thomas jones or curtis martin) can still come off the list and be on the roster week 1?

ROCKET 0 Posted July 27, 2006 Correct. The whole PUP list is a joke. The Pats have Seymour and Chad Jackson on the list among many others. Seymour I can see but Jackson needs all the reps he can get. He supposedly tweeked a hammy but will be ready to go in a day or two. I think the whole thing is just a way for BB and the Pats to look at a couple more players they would normally have to waive before camp opens.

I think the Eagles placed Correll Buckhalter on the PUP list for a day, and then the next day they removed him from it. It seems like more teams are playing around with it this season than in the past. Maybe the new CBA has something to do with it. Either way, if a player is placed on the PUP list during the pre-season, they could still be back by week one, if not within a couple days. Seems like we'll have to judge for ourselves how severe the injury really is.
TD Ryan2 316 Posted July 28, 2006 just a few more thoughts about PUP: I believe that there are 2 forms of PUP: active-PUP and reserve-PUP. - if you are placed on the active-PUP, you can come off it anytime (as described by Parja and soggy above). However, the roster spot counts agains the 80man limit as does the salary against the cap. - if you are placed on reserve-PUP, you are ineligible to play or practice for the first 6 weeks of the season. The roster spot does not count against the 80 (then 52) man limit. I don't know about the salary (but I'd guess that it does count against the cap). After the first 6 weeks, the player must either play or be placed on Injured Reserve. I believe that Ted Bruschi was placed on "inactive" PUP last year. Overall, I don't think the active-PUP is that big of a deal right now... reserve-PUP is what you worry about. As far as NE is concerned, I heard that Belichick held his infamous conditioning run yesterday... and MAYBE some of these guys on the PUP failed the run? It's just a rumor though.
