Rally Millar 0 Posted August 13, 2006 Visit the old port as much as possible. Bars, bars and more bars. I live in South Portland, but last year I lived right downtown Portland.

redtodd 7 Posted August 13, 2006 I used to perform in Maine a lot because white trash love me. Portland is a pretty cool city though. I think it is a great place to live.
Guest tiki_gods Posted August 13, 2006 Maine is a great place. Old Orchard Beach is the shitz. I live in New Hampshire, much better place to live. No sales or income taxes.
wil_d_thril 0 Posted August 13, 2006 I live in New Hampshire, much better place to live. No sales or income taxes. I knew New Hampshire didn't have a state income tax, but I didn't realize no sales tax. Are your property taxes outrageous? I've only been to Maine once, and I got laid. Maine Are you saying that Maine women are desperate? Visit the old port as much as possible. Bars, bars and more bars. I live in South Portland, but last year I lived right downtown Portland. Seems like they have really revitalized the Old Port in the last few years. I'm definitely looking to visiting some of the BrewPubs, bars and restaurants! I'm also looking forward to catching the Sea Dogs (Red Sox AA affiliate) and Pirates (affiliate of Mighty Ducks). You really can't beat minor league hockey! Guest tiki_gods Posted August 13, 2006 I knew New Hampshire didn't have a state income tax, but I didn't realize no sales tax. Are your property taxes outrageous? Severity of property tax depends on where you live. If you live in a property rich town, tax is low. If you live in a property poor town, taxes are higher because there are less property to draw from. Also, it depends on the selectboards/school boards of your area. If you have liberal spending members/communities your property taxes are higher. NH is very much into no centralized government, everything locally controlled so if you don't want high taxes get involved at the local level (ie town meeting, school boards) and vote the spending down if you deem it unnecessary. Liberatarianism is big here, hence the motto: Live Free or Die.
Dan 66 Posted August 15, 2006 I'm from Maine. I actually am not far away from where you're at. I live in Saco. However, if you're looking for things here that are going to be outlandish, I'm not going to be much help, although that stuff exists. Maine is a slow down. I'm from Upstate New York, and the feeling is one that almost deliberately slows down once you come into the state. Portland area is an interesting mix of "old-school" Maine and the nouveaux-riche that have been moving up from Massachusetts the last decade. A lot of your towns are struggling with growing, because they aren't used to doing, and aren't sure if they want to. Whereabouts are you moving to? You said the Portland area, but that can mean as south as I am, or as north as Yarmouth. Welcome soon to Maine.

FranksTanks 0 Posted August 15, 2006 I went to high school in Maine for my senior year. It was about two hours inland from Portland. Very small town, not much to do, but Portland and the rest of the coast seemed pretty cool. It's very beautiful county up there and very laid back. I didn't mind it one bit. Mudhounds 0 Posted August 15, 2006 Lived in Scarborough for a while. Great little town about a half-hour south of Portland. Lived in Old Orchard Beach while the house was being built. Was on the water and was awesome. Used to walk the beach and walk the rocks finding hermit crabs as a young Mudhound. In Dallas now and I envy the weather in Maine. Oh to be over a hundred for a couple of months really sucks the big one. Mud out

Will be working in Portland, but pretty much keeping all the options open about where to live. In the process of researching schools, etc., but hoping to keep it within a 15 - 20 mile commute. Definitely looking forward to the slower pace! Good starters: Gritty's $3 Dewey's Sebago Brewing Great Lost Bear Stone Coast Best dining:(not cheap) Fore St. Thanks!
