Packers O line shuffle

Recommended Posts

Colledge was demoted, Spitz moves to left guard, Tony Moll moves to right guard. I'm all for getting your best players on the field, and they have time. But damn. Shuffling like this hurts continuity, at a spot where Green Bay can't really afford it. My optimism on this season is fading quickly.

Drawing the line

Colledge demoted after poor performance

By TOM SILVERSTEIN

Green Bay - After a performance like the one the Green Bay Packers' offensive line gave Saturday night, each and every one of the starters had to wonder whom they would be lining up with Monday afternoon when practice began.

Someone was going to receive a one-way ticket to the second team.

It turned out that second-round pick Daryn Colledge, the former Boise State left tackle who is trying to make the transition to left guard in the National Football League, was the one to go. When the Packers lined up in practice, rookie Jason Spitz had moved from right to left guard and fifth-round pick Tony Moll, recently considered a project at right tackle, was in place at right guard.

Any chance some decent O lineman become available when teams start making their cuts?

One can hope, but I don't really see it at this point. This is going to be a problem all season; again. Losing Barry and Klemm is looking even worse now, because they're shuffling their tackles now too. If just one of them was healthy, I'd feel better. But the Clifton injury, combined with the guard shuffling. Ugh. I'm not liking this much. 4-12 is well within range.

Yeah..moving a tackle over. Any possibility Colledge gets any time at tackle in practice to help to back up Clifton? (though I think he needs all the time at guard he can get).

I doubt it. Sounds like Coston is over at right tackle, and Colledge is the backup at guard. It sucks, but my warm fuzzies for the season fade with every new bit of Packer news.

Yeah...I read that about Coston going back to RT.

So who now is out there with Clifton at LT?

Bourke?

Yes, it looks like Bourke.

Moll struggles

New starting right guard Tony Moll had a tough time on one-on-one blocking drills Tuesday night. On Moll’s first rep, he got beat by rookie Johnny Jolly. On Moll’s next rep, defensive tackle Corey Williams beat him so badly that assistant line coach James Campen had them go again against each other immediately. Williams proceeded to beat Moll again. Moll took two more reps during the drill. On the first, he successfully blocked defensive tackle Jeremy Nichols. On the second, Nichols returned the favor and beat Moll.

Wow. This doesn't bode well for the Packer offense, least of all the 2 running backs returning from injury.

If they cannot run the ball again (they were piss poor on the ground last year), with the same passing attack and Favre running for his life, they could match their record from last season.

It's a shame, because the Packer defense should be better. It won't matter if they're constantly on the field and/or playing from behind all the time.

Shuffling guys around on the line while installing a new offense with new blocking schemes is never good, especially with 2 RBs returning from injury and an aging QB (with little help at WR).

No doubt. I had high hopes, but they've been quickly dashed by this series of moves. I'm not sure what to think now.

I've been a big Ted Thompson supporter, but man. He had an awful lot of money to spend and ignored guys like Hutchinson. I know I defended it at the time, but man. If this is the best they could do, well, that's just BS.

I hear you. McNabb was getting killed last year because of the injuries up front. People killed Andy Reid for not running the ball last year, but there was no one to really block.

Success comes from the line play. It's great to have a solid defense, but when your defense is constantly out of the field, or playing from behind, it makes life way too difficult.

Before this info was leaked out, I had the Packers at a possible 8-8. With a bad o-line, I can't see them finishing no better than 6-10.

I don't like this at all. Colledge was chosen ahead of a few other big time recruits from big time programs in the draft and now he's being demoted for other rookies?

OT's that went later.

Mcneill from Auburn

Trueblood from BC

Spencer from Pitt

Winston from Miami

Green Bay's gotta hope some competent OL get cut. Either that or get on the horn for a trade or two. Ted, this is unacceptable.

Could be a "demotion" for this week because of his poor play. Nobody knows just yet.

It just keeps getting better.

Taking his lumps

Day 3 as a starter wasn't too much different from Day 1 or Day 2 for rookie offensive lineman Tony Moll.

It was rough.

The coaches are trying to find out whether Moll, a tight end two years ago at Nevada and a tackle until Monday, is one of the five best linemen in camp and worthy of a starting job. The last two practices were in pads and Moll has struggled to adjust.

"I didn't particularly sit there and watch him today," coach Mike McCarthy said. "I know he had a couple rough moments in the team drill. Once I look at the film I'll have a better idea of that."

There's a chance Moll, a fifth-round pick, won't show enough to make it into the starting five, but he deserved the chance to prove himself based on solid performances in the intrasquad game and the exhibition opener.

My fearless prediction is that free agent Mookie Moore will line up at RG for the Packers against the Bears at Lambeau on 9/10. He has some history with the coaching staff from his days in Atlanta and was their opening day starter at LG in 2004, but suffered injuries to both shoulders and has not played the past two seasons.

I'm a big fan of O-line play and really disappointed at how far the Packers line has fallen in the past two years. What a disaster.
