Yoga anyone?

Recommended Posts

Seriously considering taking a Yoga class, but there are so many different kinds to choose from.

Anyone here have any experience/knowledge of which kinds are good? I guess my overall goal is to do it for relaxation, flexibility, lowering stress.

Any suggestions appreciated. :D

TIA

I do Hot Yoga with my gf twice or so a week, at first I laughed, but it is a good workout. Its also improving my flexibility.

The first class I did, I was amazed at how much you sweat. Doing yoga for 1.5 hours in a hundred degree room will do that.

I like it though.

I've never heard of this one. That sounds pretty intense... not sure I could handle that one!

You mean Bikram?

BEG, maybe this will help you decide: Which yoga class is right for me?

My wife is in a beginner pilates class and she says it's good.

I've heard some really good things about Pilates. A girlfriend of mine brought over a Pilates workout video to my house a few years back and, though I only tried it once, I liked it.

I may consider taking a class.

Hatha yoga is a good place to start if you've never done any yoga. Kripalu is good for increasing strength. and bikram- the sweatfest is a bit more challenging

kripalu

hatha

good luck.

I am planning to take a pilates class when school starts myself.

Thats it

I couldn't remember the spelling, I really like it. You might need to take some emergen-c with you though at first.

Do you do it? What are your thoughts?

Thanks Jessy. That page is pretty informative.

I think I remember you saying once that you were taking a yoga class. Which kind are you in? (maybe it wasn't you).

It's Hatha, I think. The gym doens't use proper names. The classes I take are either usually called power yoga or some variation on that. A relaxation class is good every now and again, but I like the more workout-y kind of classes.

Plus, even in a power yoga class, you do a warm up and cool down that are much more relaxing than the rest of the practice.

Thanks for the links Fervid.

This one sounds really interesting and pretty close to what I'm looking for.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the more 'workout-y' type. I usually prefer this as well, but I'm also planning to enroll in some kind of dance class for one or two nights a week and I already run a few times a week too. I thought a nice relaxation class might be nice.

Thanks for your help.

Kripalu is excellent, however I would recommend going along to your local Ashtanga class. You can also get a DVD called " Short forms" by David Swenson, which has an excellent 30 min Ashtanga workout for beginners, and is the best beginners dvd around IMO, however if you want to progress further than the odd 30 min beginners session, a class is a must as a dvd wont explain the breathing( ujjayi) or the concept of bandhas ( internal locks) and drishtis ( gazing) nearly as well as a qualified instructor can.Ashtanga classes tend to teach the sun salutations very well as they are seen as an initial point for a lot of yoga flow classes so they are ideal for beginners.

Hmmm... I'll look into more info on this one.

Thanks!

I don't do yoga or much of any exersise (see lazy bastard thread), but my wife is a yoga instructor for the last 9 years, so I do enjoy the benefits.

:pointstosky:

:P I'm sure you do, Kutulu.

Is yoga the one to take if you want your girl to be able to put her ankles behind her ears?
