Thin Spirit 0 Posted September 13, 2006 This franchise is such a focking joke. 15 years, 67 million guaranteed. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2584306

ZeroTolerance 584 Posted September 13, 2006 This could be the worst idea since Yashin recieved a 10 year deal. Hmm, I can't for the life of me remember what team made THAT decision.
Odie 0 Posted September 13, 2006 My friend called me up with this tad bit of info... I think i laughed for about 5 mins straight. And, the best part is , every dime is guarenteed. SO when DP is 37 yrs old, and a shell of his crap self ( hes not that good to begin with ) the islanders cap will be on the hook for 4.5 million Neil Smith and Patty Lafontaine had it right jumping ship
BMoney 0 Posted September 13, 2006 odie..you are so right..i thought..were they afraid that lafontaine would do this?... i remember seeing rick in juniors..he was one of the better goalies that the usa had to offer..but thats the usa.. if the devils were to give marty a lifetime deal..maybe to keep him under 4 mil now(a bargain)..but pay him in the future as a thank u..i could see it..it wouldnt be smart..but teams do it..marty deserves it after always being paid lower than he deserved.. but rick d?....15 friggen years? he hasnt even won a playoff game yet.... i love the reasoning...when he becomes a $7 mil goalie..4.5 wil be a bargain...HUH?...you drafted a 7 mil goalie already... problem was..you traded him to florida (luongo)...passed on heatley and gaborik for dipetro.. i dont know whats worse...laughing at this..or being ticked that i dont work for the isles...joke or not, i would take the job in a heartbeat...that would rock.. and they are at rock bottom.. how did a hot head loser goalie get the gm job?...unreal.. ((and i cant wait to get Brodeurs new book..the stories about agents and his hatred for patty roy are awesome...hes so right..roy is a ######...))

De Novo 0 Posted September 13, 2006 Unless the conversation went something like the following, this is relatively easy to break down. Isles: We'll give your client a 10 year deal worth $65MM. Agent: Tack on another 5 years and $2 million and you've got a deal If you assume the salary cap increases at 5% per year (we'll use this as the discount rate), they're paying him only $3.25MM per year in today's dollars (or $49MM upfront). Prima facie, doesn't seem terrible. A 10 year deal at the same per annum rate as his 15-year deal is $3.6MM in today's dollars (or $36MM upfront). What this means is that over the last 5 years, with ZERO risk of injury to Pietro, you must believe that a goalie of DiPietro's caliber would earn $2.6MM per in today's dollars over the last 5 years (49-36)/5 for a 15-year deal to make sense. More than believable. When you account for the risk that he doesn't even play out the last 5, that number rises substantially. 50% risk of not playing out (or sucking) the last 5 years means you must believe he's worth $5.2MM per year in today's dollars. Lower that number to 20% (more likely) and you have to believe he's worth $13 mil per year in today's dollars. You can obviously run this on any alternate contract length, but I used 10 years as a basis for comparison based on the Yashin deal. Point is... what an awful deal (unless their scouting department reallllllly knows something we don't)
TommyGavin 790 Posted September 13, 2006 I like it and you all suck Luongo is a pvssy. It is a HUGE gamble that I think will turn out ok. What IS scary when this deal is over my 8 year old will be in college or the starting CF for the Red Sox !!!!

What IS scary is that your 8 year old has the same odds of starting in center for the Sox as this contract working out
