What's the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite?

Long story short, Sunnis and Shiites disagreed on who should take over after the death of Muhammad (the original, not Muhsin) in the 7th century.

 

Sunnis: it should be his closest adviser

Shiites: it should be his son-in-law (nepotism!)

 

The son-in-law initially won, but then HIS son, who took over, was killed by the Sunnis. Surprisingly, things escalated.

They recognize the heirs of the four caliphs as legitimate religious leaders. Shiites believe that only the heirs of the fourth caliph, Ali, are the legitimate successors of Mohammed.

 

OBL is a Sunni, and they're pretty pissed about the destruction of the caliphs. I think he even made mention of it in his 9-11 video
