BAILEY, Colo. (AP) — The gunman who took six girls hostage in a high school classroom and killed one "did traumatize and assault our children," and the attack was "sexual in nature," the sheriff said Thursday.

Investigators identified the gunman as Duane Morrison, a 54-year-old who lived out of his vehicle. The motive for the assault remains a mystery, said Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener.

 

The takeover of Platte Canyon High School began when the gunman ordered students to line up at the chalk board as he tapped each with his gun and told them to stay or go, a student in the classroom said Thursday.

 

Cassidy Grigg, 16, said the man walked in, fired a warning shot at the floor and ordered the students to line up. He told some to leave and others — all girls — to stay.
