brinett9 0 Posted November 20, 2006 So the angle is that giving money to churches is some kind of a good thing, right?
MDC 7,331 Posted November 20, 2006 Really? You don't think that liberals care more for the downtrodden, whereas conservatives only want to make more money for themselves? I find that hard to believe. No I don't think that liberals care more for the downtrodden than conservatives - I think they have a difference of opinion on how to care for the downtrodden the right way. There are fringe liberals who believe in near limitless spending on social welfare and I don't agree with them. And there are fringe Republicans who are strong believers in social darwinism and don't think the government should serve any function as a social safety net, and I don't agree with them either. At any rate, I'll agree that the fringe liberals I'm talking about probably do pat themselves on the back for their "compassion." But a lot of the fringe Republicans I'm talking about also hold themselves up as being the moral majority.
davebg 0 Posted November 20, 2006 Davebg, Didn't you say in an earlier thread that organized religion was worthless? Seems to me a lot of good is done by religious folks, as you point out in this article. Maybe I'm misunderstanding. Church goers come out looking pretty good in this article. I'm a little surprised you posted it given your earlier disdain for religion. One thing I will say is that the article seems to compare religious conservatives with secular liberals. What about religous liberals? We do exist you know. As do secular conservatives. I never said organized religion was "worthless". I've said that it's responsible for as much evil as it is good and that I personally don't care for it much, but not "worthless". Another thing, people are automatically assuming that the increased charity on the part of cons in this survey is b/c cons come from some fundamental Christian background. I think that's oversimplifying things a bit. I mean, my ideas and opinions on this board make me a con, yet, as you point out, I am not very religious...and I'm definitely not a Christian. I must have misunderstood. In the thread where you called Catholics scumbags you professed "a hatred for all religions". The article in this thread that you seem to agree with is clearly praising religious folks (religious conservatives, specifically) for their generosity in giving to charity. I thought you maybe you had changed your mind.

A while back I saw a comedian on TV who perfectly illustrated the difference. He said, "Don't get me wrong, I believe in God. I just don't trust anyone who says they work for Him." IMO your average Catholic should be just as outraged as I was about that particular story.
