6 Team League Draft Strategy

Recommended Posts

Alright, so some buddies wanted to get a league started just to pass the time until real FF started, so we have a 6-team league Yahoo draft tonight at 6. It's just for bragging rights and to have something to do, but obviously I'd still love to win it and talk smack every week. I know that "anything less than 12 teams is for girls" and "only idiots draft before August" and whatever, you guys can find a new thread. Just thought this might spark an entirely different discussion, as the strategy is obviously going to have to change. The question is: how much?

Starting requirements:

1 QB

2 RB

3 WR

1 TE

1 K

1 D

Everything standard (4 pts per pass TD, 6 for every other form) and 1/2 PPR. Otherwise, totally vanilla as we were just looking to get one going. Interested to hear different strategies and thoughts.

Do you load up RBs early? Do you wait since there will be quality backs in later rounds?

How bout a QB? Take Brady/Manning early and have that advantage or are you better served with another RB/WR?

How early to you grab a TE? Gates? KWII? Witten? Do you wait and just grab a guy in the last few rounds?

Do you take more or less risks with injury prone/unsure status guys for the big payoff? Or does it potentially hurt you more because everyone will be fairly strong in a league this small?

Anyway, I know basically everyone here has their RB/RB or RB/WR/WR or RB/QB/WR or whatever strategy. But let's hear what you've got on a league half the size. Discuss.

It's impossible to say who or what position to grab before the draft as every pick could create a different strategy. I'd say try to get dominant players at every position (obvious right) - what I'm saying is to gain separation from others in a 6 team league you'll need to grab players that put up huge points and players that can separate from others.

Players to target:

Adrian Peterson, Brian Westbrook, LaDainian Tomlinson, Steven Jackson

Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Reggie Wayne

Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Tony Romo, Carson Palmer

Jason Witten, Antonio Gates, Kellen Winslow, Tony Gonzalez

I'd make sure to get one of the top 5 QBs, and one of the top 4 TEs.

Getting Randy Moss and/or Tom Brady or Peyton Manning could be huge. Hopefully you get a top 2 pick so you can get LT or AD. I'd try to get 3 top 15 WRs too.

That was sort of my idea, with regards to trying to grab one of those top tier guys at each position and fill out depth later, but it's tempting to just be the last guy to take a QB and grab Big Ben, Brees, or whoever it is that isn't gone yet while loading up on WRs.

Would you gamble more than usual? Guys like Marvin, Frank Gore, etc that could totally flop or could be huge. Is it better to get a sure thing every time or take alot of risks knowing there's plenty on the WW?

also, not really looking for advice for me. Mostly just a different discussion than I've ever seen on here.

This is a beautiful reply. I might print it out, frame it, and kneel to it daily.

My strategy would be take all risk/reward guys. Only draft the guys that you believe have the highest ceiling, regardless of the chance that they have of actually hitting the ceiling. To win the league you need a team full of studs, so that means skipping over alot of guys that provide guaranteed production.

Avoid guys like Edge, E Graham, Lendale, T Jones, H Ward, L Coles, TJ Housh, Hassleback, and instead take guys like R. Bush, S Young, CJ1, CJ2, Donovan McNabb, etc.

I'd say go LT, Brady, or Manning in that style draft if you can.

Someone will prolly grab Gates early (take him first if you see the value around round 5 or 6, I guess).

If you don't get Gates, I have Gonzo, Witten, Winslow, and Dallas Clark all pretty close.....wait on TE if you don't get Gates.

Try to get the best starters with every pick. I wouldn't take RB with my first three picks in this draft. I'd fill all my QB RB WR starters before going for backups....depth will be easy to get.

Yep, good stuff and I almost agree with everything but I wouldn't value the TE so much. Remember quality TEs, AND quality WRs will be available all season. A Stud QB will be very valuable. Getting 1 stud RB will also be important. Getting a stud WR wont as all you have to do is outplay the other team's 3 WRs.

I like Columbus Cowboys, Adam's Crew and the Donkey Punchers, in that order. Which team is yours?

Won't say just yet. Like to get some other opinions and don't want them swayed.

I admit I only glanced at the teams but the Cowboys stuck out to me. Lots of receptions in that crew. LT2. Romo. I'm high on Lynch. Hate some of the later picks for him though. :(
