Or....you could increase the value of each 'chip' of gold until they are equal with the amount of cash. Then all subsequent transactions of printing money by the government would necessitate the acquisition of the appropriate amount of gold.

Why?

 

Let's say you have 1 dollar.

 

Now, let's say you you back up each dollar with gold. (You need to physically back each dollar with gold).

 

How much gold is there in the world? Were would the US store all this gold? We would have to confiscate it all and store it. Even then there just isn't enough.

 

Since we won't have enough gold to back each dollar at the present value, we have induced inflation.... Thus your dollar is weaker.
