peenie 1,915 Posted March 24, 2009 i love it how some of you geniuses seem to think you're the only person in the world to think, "maybe it's better if we simply let the banks and automakers etc. fail!" you don't think it has crossed policy makers minds, "why would anyone drum up more debt when we already are in shtloads of debt already?" you don't suppose there are people who have thought, "a lot of people are about to lose their jobs and homes, we better find a way to provide the unemployed with services and jobs." nooooo, you think it's better that they all just suck it up and work it out. right, let that happen to you. lose your healthcare and see if you won't be glad your state is about to receive millions in medicaid funding. i think it's easy to sit in china and tell the people here in the united states to let them eat cake, but those of us that can actually feel the effects of the negligence of the past 8 or more years knows something must be done. like you, i'm nervous that the fix is really just another blow to our economy. BUT i'm not going to sit here and slam obama, our congress or the stimulus package BEFORE it has even failed.
Voltaire 5,316 Posted March 24, 2009 It's true I'm not feeling the slightest effect of the economic meltdown or any personal worry. I'm in great shape, we're living comfortably, I've got zero concern about my job, complete job security, the school I work in is healthy and growing school, and last week, Newsweek magazine actually singled out by name the city I live in (Chongqing) as still booming without missing a beat. http://www.newsweek.com/id/189258 But it's really unfair to think I'm not concerned with what's going on. No, I didn't support the original bailout bill. They were never punitive enough with the investors and executives of those companies that got taxpayer bailout money. Most of the money disappeared. It should be pretty obvious by now that when the bill was written, they were looking out for the banks and executives, not for the taxpayers. We've got pretty much nothing to show for that money and Larry Summers is all smug and doesn't seem too concerened where it all went. Now Tim Geithner is ready to put the taxpayers on the hook for all the bad debt and releive the banks of any responsibility for their decisions. We're Uncle Sucker. As far as the stimulus bill, I was less opposed to that. I can appreciate running a deficit in times of economic trouble, but there wasn't enough stimulus in there and to much long term entitlement money that had nothing to do with stimulus. Now, I'm keeping an open mind about the government health care at this point. The plan hasn't been developed yet and when it is presented, I'll be most intersted in ways to reign in expenses. I voted for President Obama and I've supported most all the things President Obama is doing outside the economic area. But after screwing up the bailout bill, (I know it was passed when Bush was in office but I don't see any difference between the Obama and Bush position on the bailout) I won't go to bat for him on buying up these toxic assets. I hope it works for the good of the country. I still like President Obama, but I think he's on the wrong track and flushing massive sums into a black hole. peenie 1,915 Posted March 24, 2009 I slammed gwb before he failed. that's true, some people did. even quite publicly (dixie chicks). to be honest, the bush/obama presidency has been very good for me. people are bashing obama but it's not just white people or racists or even conservatives. i'm glad people are disagreeing with ideas and policies.
