Taking multiple WR's first...

Recommended Posts

I am in a 12 team, 2 man keeper. Standard scoring, 6 pts for all TDs and .5ppr.

Start: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, RB/WR, TE, Def/ST, K

I am keeping Andre Johnson and Randy Moss. Since it is a 12 team, 2-man keeper I am projecting the top tiers of RBs to be kept. I am quite sure that Fitz will not be kept (the guy with him also has ADP and Slaton). I have the first pick this year, due to winning the turd bowl last year.

I am considering going with Fitz with my first pick. My hope is that I will start a run on WRs and when my next pick comes I will target a top flight QB, say Rivers, then go for one of Witten or Gates with my 3rd pick. After this I will start targeting high upside guys like Felix Jones, Ray Rice, Benson, Donald Brown, etc. Maybe some of these guys won't be there, but by being ahead of the curve on picking positions, and basically sacrificing a legitimate RB1, I hope to have potentially the top three WR's, a top 3-4 QB and a top 1-2 TE. This hopefully can carry my team over the hump of maybe having RB's that are only putting up 9-10 points per game rather than the 15-20 I should expect from a legit RB.

I guess my feeling is that there is a big dropoff in talent both WR and RB wise from the top few guys. I don't really have a chance at grabbing a top 10 RB (as they are being kept), so I feel like really ramping up the other positions makes sense.

Doing this could result in a starting roster of :

Rivers

Felix

Beanie Wells

Andre

Moss

Fitz

Gates

Crazy?

Not necessarily crazy with .5 ppr and all TD's 6pts. You will have to load up on RB's late to make sure you hit some gold with those guys. Don't be afraid to deviate from your plan and get a RB in the 2nd or 3rd.

well... looking at your team, and the rules you are playing by, I dont blame you for keeping who you are keeping.

if you could let us know who is likely to be the 4 or 5 best RB's I'll tell you if Fitz is crazy or not.

as it appears your team is in rebuilding mode anyhow, it may not be a bad idea to take a chance on Moreno. If he is the immediate impact guy the broncos are hoping for, it may be well worth the #1 pick to get him.

even if he doesnt perform until mid season, if you end up with a good, young RB you can keep & build around, you'll be a better team in the long run.

definately take Fitz

but what RB's might be left at the next turn when you say you would take Rivers and Gates? If there is any RB worth drafting I would take them in a heartbeat over a TE..... you can wait and get a Clark, Cooley, Olsen or Carlson.

even with QB you could prolly wait till your next turn for a Palmer, Ryan, McNabb

ok, so like I said its a 12 team 2-man keeper. We haven't declared our keepers yet, so I am guessing a bit, but these are the guys I believe will be kept:

Moss

Andre

ADP

ForteTurner

MJD

SJax

CJohnson

Bwest

LT

Deangelo

Slaton

Gore

Portis

Jacobs

Brady

RBrown

Ryan Grant

Wes Welker

Reggie Bush

K Smith

M Lynch

DWard

Cedric Benson

Man, after writing this out my options at RB are extremely limited compared to ADP. MBIII is a viable option, but after that Pierre Thomas is going a full round and a half later than him.

The best RBs left are (in rough ADP order):

MBIII

Pierre Thomas

Joe Addai

Knowshon

Willie Parker

Tjones

DMC

MBIII is interesting, and I think his value is comparable to Fitz. I would be inclined to take him instead because you need a RB more than you need another WR.

With that being said, if the guy in the #2 or #3 Slot gives you a decent offer to move up in the draft, I'd consider taking that deal.

Brees and Manning will be back in the pool?

id still go ahead and take Fitz and have a SICK WR group of AJ Fitz and Moss pretty much the consensus top 3 guys.

when it gets back to you for the round 2/3 turn, I would pray that something is available at RB out of Pierre Thomas, Thomas Jones, DMC

If you start with Fitz, Andre, and Moss I'm not sure it matters who your RBs are. I'd target 2 RBs in the 2nd/3rd (get one at least), but go with value if a top QB or even TE is available.

that was kind of my thinking. Those three have the potential of combining for 350 yds and 3 TDs every week and to score as much as three low end top ten RB's when the season is all over. Its a risk, but if I start with that as my base and gamble on a couple of guys like Pierre/JStew/Felix/Ray Rice with the hope that these guys gets more carries than previously projected, i could be in a pretty good situation.

Not crazy. I think you are doing the right thing if Fitz is going to be there. Starting those 3 each week would be awesome. Like someone already mentioned, with those 3 starting each week, it shouldn't matter a whole lot who your RBs are, to a point.

I won a league last year going WR early and often. I ended up with some nice RBs too latter in the draft. I drafted TO, Randy, Roddy White, and Steve Smith(Panthers). Traded TO early in the season for AJ. In a ppr, you can win with the stud WR theory. It's worked for me several times. I have also seen other in my league win going stud WR. That is why I first took a look at going WR. This guy that was in my league when I first started playing FF won a couple titles going stud WR. I learned quickly he was on to something.

I think this is a good risk and should make for a really fun, pretty unique season for you. This is basically a superb version of a risky strategy Matt Waldman wrote about over at footballguys, wherein you're doing the usually impossible and getting the three top ADP receivers. If your keeper projections are accurate, you can probably expect most of the 1st and 2nd round to be QBs and WRs; it looks like everyone except the guy keeping Brady is keeping a pair of RBs. I think you stand a very good chance of grabbing Thomas Jones, D-Mac, or both at the 2/3 corner.

What awful players does the guy keeping Benson have, by the way?

well, I hope you post on here to let us know how the strategy plays out. If you do actually start a run on WR's you may end up getting a RB who is almost as good as what you would get with this pick. The danger of this strategy is if the run does not happen, your team will likely have some holes in the lineup.

I know I didnt much like the strategy at first, but as I think about it more, it does have a chance of working. Especially if almost everyone has already kept 2 RB's.

Post here when your draft is done so we can see the end result.

Will do. I agree it is risky, but it is somewhat calculated. Like you said either a run on WR's starts and I grab a decent RB in round 2 or people shore up their RB3 spots and I am left spot starting RB4-5 as though they are RB1 and RB2s.

Regarding the Benson question, yeah it seems bad, though hes got MJD. The only other "keeper" quality guys are Cutler, Roy Williams, Felix jones. seriously.

yeah thats all true but one thing that needs to get mentioned is the quality of WR's you are attempting this with.... This isn't just a good group.. say Fitz, Jennings, Welker.... No, this is THE BEST trio you could possibly have Fitz, Moss, AJ

if a run on Wr's and qb's happens you are golden. If it doesn't, you have the top 3 WR's and can use one as trade bait to go out and get a good franchise RB.
