mrgymrat 0 Posted December 21, 2009 Just wondering what the defintion of a lateral was (versus a pass). I know Bolidn's TD was briefly listed as a 5yd TD run then switched back to a TD reception. It's close as to whether it was a backward pass. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2009122002/2...9000d5d8151d37f Same thing with the Brees to Moore TD reception. Though it does appear to be a backward pass if you watch the whole clip (looks like Brees is on the 9yd line and Moore catches it at the 10yd line). http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2009121900/2...9000d5d815175b7 --- So with so much riding on this week, just curious as to who determines how these plays are categorized? I came out good on both (unlike the Meachem fumble recovery a while back).

In American football a lateral pass or lateral, officially referred to as a backward pass,is a sideways or rearward throwing of the football. The pass cannot itself advance the ball, though of course the receiver can advance after catching it. This is distinguished from a forward pass, which moves the ball in the direction of the opponent's end zone.

gopkrs 0 Posted December 25, 2009 I had thought that a lateral (sideways or backwards) and everything else was established by the refs on the field but it looks like it can be changed after the game. Might as well get it right.

Might as well get it right. What's a lateral and what's a pass is only determined when a pass would be a penalty. As long as it's a legal play, the play goes on. The stat people figure what's what later. RTSports has corrections pretty much every week, mainly sack corrections.
