BiPolarBear 483 Posted February 22, 2016 It was a real privilege to take part in this. I learned a lot from everyone else and learned some on my own as well. The information below is written without notes, from the research I did for the pick: In the early days of our country Frontier Law allowed a person to own new lands by improving it. One acceptable improvement would be to grow 50 apple trees. You wouldn't want to plant edible apples. That would be stupid. The more valuable apples were known as "spitters", because if you tasted one that is exactly what you would do. They taste awful. What they are good for is making hard apple cider. Hard cider was as much a part of an early American meal as meat and bread. It was a lot safer to drink than water, besides tasting great. Everybody drank it everyday. What happened? Only now is hard apple cider making a comeback. It's not that hard to make, but it does require a spitter apple if you want good taste and complexity. The many groves of those trees were cut down by the FBI to keep the citizens from making alcohol during Prohibition. When Prohibition ended, the legal beer brewers and alcohol distillers started right up, but it takes ten years to grow a spitter apple tree from a seed before it bares fruit. That's a long time to wait for a drink, so there went hard cider as a daily staple. (Yes, you can go up to Kroger right now and buy a bottle of apple juice and make drinkable hard cider.) There was a man who would walk out into the frontier and plant an apple nursery ahead of the settler advance. He would fence it off and sell it to a settler family when they arrived. He didn't sell all the land. When he died he had 1200 acres. The lands he kept was left in the care of a neighbor who was able to sell apple trees for his trouble. The original planter and land owner would return every year or so, to tend the trees. Not all of these apple orchards were small affairs. One in Pennsylvania had 15,000 trees. The kind and humble character of the man contributed to his legend. He heard that a sick horse was going to be put down so he bought the animal. He bought the horse a few acres of grazing land and brought it back to health. When it was healed he gave it to a needy family who promised him that the horse would be well treated. John Chapman - Wildcard One of his trees got missed by the FBI it is still alive and about 176 years old. http://tinyurl.com/gkrvxj4

BiPolarBear 483 Posted February 22, 2016 The FBI cut down all his trees, but one? Ugh Terrible. I didn't know this. If I remember correctly, the tree came from his seeds, but was not actually planted by him. He gave nine seeds to a man who planted seven. One came up. None of his orchards survived. None of his orchards survived. I didn't realize that Johnny Appleseed's apples were sour. In the Civil War era marching song "John Brown's Body" the Michigan unit that captured Jefferson Davis changed a verse and serenaded him with a line that said "We'll hang ol' Jeff Davis from a sour apple tree" (Jefferson Davis lived beyond the civil war) so sour apple trees, like the swarms of huge passenger pigeons or massive buffalo heards, must have been ubiquitous in that era. Very interesting. Most apple trees were sour apple trees. Did you know that eating apples are the product of grafting? Johnny Appleseed considered that practice barbaric and painful to the apple tree. because of this, he couldn't produce edible apples. If you plant a seed from an apple tree that produces excellent Golden Delicious apples, it cannot be predicted what will come up. It probably won't be a Golden Delicious, though. More likely an inedible "spitter".
Voltaire 5,203 Posted February 23, 2016 I've got Mr. Irrelevant's writeup done (found online) but he's not Mr. Irrelevant if I skip TBBOM. You wouldn't expect this guy because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. (I wonder if 90sbaby is familiar with the recurring Monty Python skit) Anyways... Tomas Torquemada - Evil Motherfocker For those who are saying, “Islam is a religion of killing innocent people and its evil,” then this guy here was Christianity's answer. Torquemada was the Inquisitor of Spain from the years 1483 to 1498. In his attempt to save the Catholic Church in Spain and in the name of God, he was responsible for the Spanish Inquisition. The Spanish Inquisition was “an ecclesiastical tribunal run” used to pick out those who threatened the Roman Catholic Church in Spain. Without evidence, Torquemada would order that Jews be tortured or killed. Reason being: he didn’t like them. Jews and many other people he thought were a threat to the church were tortured, killed and were forced to surrender their property. Children were left to starve to death. When civilians were being tortured, they were usually naked. He had a large variety of tools and toys to play with when getting medieval on his victims. Torquemada favorite torture methods were foot roasting and suffocation. People would be grilled, hanged and burned, Torquemada would pull people arms and legs out of sockets, he would force water down the throats and use a very tight cord to stop blood flow of his victims. He would crush people with extremely heavy weight, they would be pushed into chairs that had sharp points around the neck region, he used tools that would force their body to stretch, rip off his victims nipples, ears, tongues, and genitals, and he would skin people. He made Spain a living Hell and his actions and ideologies influenced future queen and king of Spain, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella who were sending explorers all over the world. Torquemada killed over 30,000 people and raked up huge style points.
