Really started in 1991 when the BE added football to begin with.  The ACC didn't grasp the gravity of football.  The SEC and others were sitting on their hands, while the BE changed the whole landscape.  Then the others came to their senses and destroyed the BE.  The damage had been done.

I don't think that started a deterioration of college sports.  Some of the schools (Pitt, Syracuse, & BC), were already playing D1 football as independents.  They, along with other independents like Miami, FL, West Va, Va Tech, Rutgers, and Temple just made them able to play within a conference matrix.  UConn came up from D2, but, like Pitt, Syracuse, and BC, they were already in the conference.  No conference was getting downsized by their emergence.

The NCAA requiring conferences having 12 schools (teams), in order to have a conference championship game, is what lead to the ACC needing to plunder another conference to get teams good enough.  Well, when you have an 8-team conference and you take their 3 best, what's happened since was predictable.  Had the NCAA allowed 10 school/team conferences have a championship game, there's a decent chance that all this moving around doesn't happen.

Rumour is UNC, Virginia, FSU & Clemson are talking with the SEC.

UNC and Duke no longer in the same conf? I think that violates the Declaration of Independence
