WhiteWonder 3,018 Posted March 22, 2023 baseball was creaming its collective pants to not only get USA/Japan but to also have a 1 run game with Ohtani closing it out against Trout. That is absolutely the script they would have had before the whole thing started. Good for them.

He’s cheap and won’t sell the team. I wouldn't use the word "cheap". They won the WS in 2002 with the 15th highest payroll in baseball. Since then, they've been in the top 10 in payroll every year except for 2... they were in the top 5, 7 times. Allocation of funds seems like the issue, not the funds being spent. Last year is a prime example. They needed pitching, so they go out and spend $30M on a guy who's always hurt and a career reliever to be their #2 and #3 starters in the rotation. Who does that? I know they like Detmers, he was a top 100 prospect and Sandoval was coming off a bit of a surprising showing at the end of 2021, but they weren't expecting gold from those two last year. Competent pitching, sure, and they did get that... but seriously, $30M on Syndagaard and Lorenzen was just pizzing money away. The Angels spent more money last year on their roster than the Pirates did in the last 3 seasons. So, yeah, "cheap" isn't the right word.
