So you are saying Getsy who worked with a pocket passer in GB came in last year and in that year his QB ran for the 2nd most yds of any qb in a season......is boxing him in?

Baker Geno Alex Smith all had shown abilities to throw the ball downfield even in NFL years where they sucked.

Fields sees the softest coverage in the NFL and still cant pass or even try to pass at times.

The play calling this year is substantially different than last year.  I saw it in the Tampa game.  Fields had ZERO designed runs that game.  Every run he had (all 4 of them - that's not boxing him in?), was him escaping the pocket from the rush.

Baker, Geno, and Smith showed WHAT abilities to throw the ball downfield?  Baker still is what he was in Cleveland... he has the ability to avoid the rush and move the ball - a BIT - but he doesn't have many sustainable drives.  He turns TD's into FG's with poor decision making.  He doesn't really see the field well, and leaves a lot of plays unfulfilled.  Alex Smith in his first 3 seasons had 19 TD's and 31 Int's with an AYA of 5.8.  Where was his ability to throw downfield?  Geno was no different.  When you say they "...had shown abilities to throw the ball downfield", did you mean to the other team?  If that's the case, yeah, I agree.

You may be right about that with Fields, I don't watch enough of their games, but I can tell you that in the Tampa game (where I watched the whole thing), there was NO soft coverage that whole game.  Tampa blitzed quite a bit and they pressured him on a third of Fields' drop backs.  They were in his face all game.  Tampa runs a 3-4 Cover 2 system.  There's no "soft coverage", it's a zone coverage designed to drop 6 back against 3 to 4 route runners while generating pass rush from their 3 down linemen and 2 edge rushers.  On top of that, the Bears were NEVER out of that game.  They were winning 7-3 after the first, down 3 at the half and down 10 going into the 4th.  They got the ball with 2 and a half minutes left in the game, down by 3.  Why is that important?  They handed the ball off that game 12 times.  Their 2 RB's totaled 11 carries for 67 yards.  If you take away the one big run (29 yards), that's still 10 carries for 38 yards.  That's not bad.  It's not great, but it's not a reason you throw the ball 29 times in comparison in a game that you were in, the whole time.

I can agree that Fields belongs in a pure read option offense.

Point is those don't work anymore.   Kappy had some monster games vs my Packers.  His season stats arent anything special but he was dangerous.  That was back before defenses saw this and had real good plans for it.

Look at Lamar since his 2nd year MVP.  Only regressing.   League has figured him out to an extent (still much more natural passer than Fields).

Hurts was in a system last year.  Still threw for 3700yds with over 66% completion.   Wasn't a pure running offense.  Could get his WRs the ball.

When your 1st round "QB" can only play in a read option offense.....he is a bust.  And will just get hurt.

But I agree that would be his best path.  Seems like you could grab a fast later round QB for that.
