After decades of advocacy, suicide deterrent finally comes to the Golden Gate Bridge

Even better if there’s some stats to back that up.

Data is always lagging, but there are a bunch of studies like THIS if you look around.    There are factors, like the underlying mental health disorder or chemical they are addicted to that changes the %s, but most I see are like that and hover around 30-40% rate of re-attempt.

There have been a few interesting studies about methods and I am looking for one if you truly want to know.   There was one from the UK when suicide by gas stove hit an all time high.  There was a push to replace them, and the death by suicides fell off and weren't replaced by a different method.    I have seen some with similar rates around the issue at hand - taking away access to a popular spot like the GG Bridge.

The added huge piece of the puzzle is lethality.  Via gun is by far the highest success rate, hovering between 85-90% death rate.   There were almost 50K deaths by suicide, so you can save many lives just by taking more lethal options away, as morbid as that is.   For example, jumping is 1/2 that guns rate and methods like cutting have a 5% or less success rate.   Big difference if a person tries to shoot themselves, jump, or cut themselves.

It's a study though.  If it doesn't say what someone wants, the study is flawed.

The study I saw showed that a 30-day waiting period for gun purchases reduced handgun suicide by >10%. I bet some people attempted handgun by other methods but some of them probably didn’t reattempt at all because (like you said) the most lethal option wasn’t readily available.

I saw a short documentary on suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge years ago. 39 people have survived jumping from it vs. 2000 dead, which makes that jump about as lethal as a shotgun blast to the head. They interviewed one survivor who said he regretted his decision the second he jumped. :o

He somehow survived with minimal injuries.

For sure, location matters for the jump as well.  I think the doc you are talking about is The Bridge.  It was good.

Also, if I remember right wasn't it a lot survived the jump and drowning kills more?  Maybe I'm remembering that wrong.

People should have the right to end their own lives. That would open the door to assisted suicide and people would no longer be cutting themselves in bathtubs for others to find. No more finding a loved one dead after they jumped out of a building or overdosing on drugs.

It's barbaric that these holier than thou people are telling others what is good for them when they don't even know what the people are feeling.

Give adults a chance to sign up for assisted suicide with a 1 year or so mandatory waiting period. If they don't change their mind or haven't already killed themselves, then let them be.

The only change to that would be for people living with physical pain that can't be cured that gives them a net negative quality of life. Then they can go any time they choose. Make their time to say goodbye an easy one if that is what they want to do and choose to follow through with it.

Not sure what you mean by that.

Every study is apparently flawed.  The flaws are usually pointed out by the people who don't agree with the study.   This has been repeated over and over and over again with covid.
