Do Republicans REALLY care about the debt?

Recommended Posts

Other than a few, like Rand Paul for instance, I don't think either side cares, but I also think it has to be in the back of their minds. I'm not sure what would trigger it, reaching a certain $ amount, another world war, or something else ?

I think they all know it will have to be addressed at some point, but as a group, they don't have the guts to do the right thing. I think their next move will be related to Social Security (notice I didn't refer to that as an entitlement) it really upsets me when people do. Medicare, maybe, but most people paid into SS for multiple decades, & if both sides of the aisle hadn't, borrowed and spent from it over the years, it wouldn't be the issue that it is today. Congress 1st focked over recipients in 1983. How were they able to do that ? Because like an article I once read stated, because the people it would affect were 12 years old at the time. Congress bent them over again 10 years later in 1993. Ex President Joe Biden voted in favor both times.

Well this thread is about Republicans. And I am not aware of any Republicans in favor of of reparations (unless you want to go back to General Sherman I guess…)

Well it's applicable since you omitted whether or not dummies cared about debt....

This was always going to be a big problem for the GOP once it became apparent that they would have such narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress. Different factions want different things, some are hardline balanced budgeters. It will be an incredible balancing act on the part of Mike Johnson if he can thread the needle to find the votes to pull it off.
