Thanks, great stuff, interesting.

I had an old friend who passed away recently, he railed for years about how Prince was a musical genius. He used to argue with another guy we knew who was a huge Metallica fan & at first we thought he was crazy but he came to be proved right.

As an aside Prince’s family I think on both sides but definitely his dad’s were Louisiana people. IIRC his father who was a jazz musician couldn’t get work in New Orleans (or he just hated it here) because of the segregation thing so he headed up north to Minny.

Anyway cool video, that was indeed one of the all time great rock solos.

How did you And your friends come to realize that he was a musical genius? After he died and you were told he was by media?

I guess Gibbons, Clapton, and McCarteny, are not in a rare group of, musicians that would disagree…

No, my buddy was proudly making this argument in the 80s. I had to listen to a lot of Prince not mention his protégés. I was first introduced to him with 1999 but he was already known for Controversy & Dirty Mind.

In biography, it’s says that his father put him in his room with numerous instruments one summer, where he was told by his father to learn all of them. Piano, guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, and signing, plus a few others. And he did.

Growing up in MN in the 80s/90s being a Prince fan was engrained. He might have been the most singularly talented American musician ever.

There are only three people that I never met that caused me great sadness upon their passing: Lemmy Kilmister, Eddie Van Halen, and Prince Rogers Nelson. Still pissed at myself for not heading to Minneapolis and hanging out at First Avenue the night he died.

IIRC, the Superdome was lit in purple that day.
