Geeks with young adult children, how are you guiding them to have long term success?

Recommended Posts

When I was 19, I started working full time.  I rented a room from another fireman for about 18 months, and then had saved enough for 20% down payment on a house that cost $87,000. That was about 4x my salary back then.  I learned from my older co-workers, 3 things that set me down a decent path.  Buy a modest home as soon as you can, buy a reliable truck and drive it drive it as long as you can, and open a 457, even if you’re only putting in $10 a pay.

For geeks with kids who have hit the workforce or just got out of college, what advice are you giving them?  Is it really any different than 30 years ago?  Maybe, I’m wrong, but it seems kids nowadays are needing more instant gratification and sacrifice for future prosperity isn’t as common as it used to be.

Their discipline, morals and work ethic should have already been instilled in them prior to their "young adult" years. That way, even if they go through a rebellious period, their foundation will always be in place to guide them when they grow out of it.
