Defensive end Howard visits Eagles

ROB MAADDI/AP

3/12/2006

PHILADELPHIA - One day after losing the player they really wanted, the Philadelphia Eagles turned their attention to other needs.

Defensive end Darren Howard visited the Eagles on Sunday, and was to remain in Philadelphia overnight. Howard said he didn't have any other visits planned and hoped to work out a deal with the Eagles.

"I like the situation. I like the team," Howard said. "It's a matter of getting a deal done."

Howard spent his first six seasons with the New Orleans Saints and twice reached double-digits in sacks. He would upgrade a defensive line that failed to generate much pressure on quarterbacks last season.

The Eagles were hoping to sign former Saints center LeCharles Bentley on the first day of the NFL's free agency period, and reportedly had reached a verbal agreement with the two-time Pro Bowl lineman. Instead, Bentley chose his hometown Cleveland Browns. So, Philadelphia switched its focus to the defensive line for now.

The 29-year-old Howard is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he had just 3 1/2 sacks in 12 games. It was a difficult year emotionally for Howard and his teammates because Hurricane Katrina wiped out New Orleans and forced the team to set up a temporary home in San Antonio.

"It was the longest 17 weeks I've ever been through. I wouldn't wish that on anybody," Howard said. "It was very stressful."

Described as a speed rusher and relentless pursuer, Howard had 11 sacks in 2000 and 2004. A second-round pick (33rd overall) from Kansas State in 2000, the 6-foot-3, 275-pound Howard had 44 1/2 sacks in six seasons with New Orleans. He didn't miss a game his first three years, but hasn't played an entire season since 2002, missing 15 games total.

Howard didn't play the final four games last season because of a knee injury. He missed two games with a neck injury and another with a knee injury in 2004, and sat out eight games with a dislocated right wrist in 2003.

"I'm healthy. I'm 100 percent," Howard said.

Howard twice was designated a franchise player by the Saints, but never signed a long-term contract and played under one-year deals each of the last two seasons.

Jevon Kearse and Trent Cole were Philadelphia's starting ends last season. Kearse, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, had 7 1/2 sacks while Cole had five as a rookie. However, the two combined for just one sack over the final six games.

Former first-round pick Jerome McDougle was expected to start opposite Kearse, but sat out the whole year after he was shot in the abdomen during a robbery attempt last summer.

The Eagles finished last in the NFC East with a 6-10 record after going to the playoffs five consecutive years and reaching the Super Bowl after the 2004 season.

They signed linebacker Shawn Barber to a one-year deal last week and are expected to aggressively pursue other free agents. Star wide receiver Terrell Owens, who was kicked off the team in November, will be released or traded before he's due to receive a $5 million roster bonus on Wednesday.

"I want to win. I want to get deep in the playoffs and go to the Super Bowl," Howard said. "The Eagles have established themselves as a team that consistently is going to be successful."

He'll be good for 8 games this season.

I never made a prediction, MDC predicted the Skins wouldn't make the playoffs. He was wrong.

I stated the Redskins were overrated. I was right.

Locked up Howard for 6 years!

The Eagles have a 1 p.m. press conference today to announce the signing of defensive end Darren Howard to a six-year contract. Howard fits in perfectly with what the Eagles do defensively: He is a speed rusher who attacks the edge and reaches the quarterback. Twice Howard has reached double digits in his career and twice he has been named a franchise player by the New Orleans Saints, moves that prevented him from reaching free agency for two years.

But as a free agent this season, Howard was a prime target of the Eagles, who believe he will add a great boost to the pass rush. Howard now teams with linebacker Shawn Barber to give the Eagles defense a new look for 2006 ...

Thanks god this board is back!

On to the Birds...

I feel extremely let down and though Im apprehensive of just ripping them but we had a lot of build up from several journalists and radio personalites in the city and we got basically nothing....

It also doesnt look like anything else is coming down the pike....

Darren Howard is a nice player but he should have been more like icing on the cake and not the entree.

They still have a hole at Jones OLB Position, need a WR who can consistently get open (I dont need a burner just a pro who gets first downs and a bit of help on the 0-Line would be nice.

It feels like once the Bentley thing fell through they had no backup plan whatsoever....and that in itself is disconcerting.

Maybe this is a pre-cursor that Runyan will be back and we will add a couple of mid-level guys sometime during the week.

I dont take anything that clown says for truth...he's a blowhard with very little information credibility.

Im disappointed because unlike other years I think this team has some glaring holes and it appears that the team disagrees...if this team thinks that just getting healthy and getting rid of its best player (owens) no matter what a headache he is, is going to bring us back to 12-4 I think they are kidding themselves.
