Montana_god 0 Posted March 24, 2006 Best move the Niners have made all off season!
football_scooter 0 Posted March 24, 2006 Strong move. Very pleased with the attention to the OL. This also helps free up one of the draft picks by filling an immediate need. This boosts the value of whomever the starting RB for the Niners is by leaps and bounds. Gore or Barlow or Hicks becomes something of a sleeper to be had in the middle rounds... ETA for someone coming in to rip on this move in 5-4-3-2-1-*
Phurfur 70 Posted March 24, 2006 I disagree. Allen is to old to be of any long time help to the 49ers. He may help them win a few games but they are still a few years away from being a contender. By then Allen will be retired.

By then Allen will be retired. the signing is for their future. they've got a young line and having a HOF caliber guy like Allen go come in and groom the youngsters is invaluable. Of course SF is a few years away from being a contender. Allen's presence is part of what will help them get there. Bringing a guy like this in to be a "coach on the field" is exactly what they need. GobbleDog 995 Posted March 24, 2006 SF has been in a "rebuilding stage" for how many years now? How many more years before they move on to the next stage?
football_scooter 0 Posted March 24, 2006 SF has been in a "rebuilding stage" for how many years now? How many more years before they move on to the next stage? Actually, SF was in cap hell, not rebuilding stage. Hard to rebuild when you have no $. The entire Erickson era was about not spending. Paying for the sins of GMs past. Now they have made sound business decisions, replaced the entire front office and coaching staff, and are acquiring talent and draft picks. Thus, they actually are rebuilding. You're what, a Dolphins fan? Yeah - really one to talk there, now that they've finally got a QB and RB. How long did it take for them to be competitive? 2001: 11-5, 2002: 9-7, 2003: 10-6, 2004: 4-12, 2005: 9-7....real competitive there. 1 game over .500 and a 4-12 season in the middle. Niners: 2001: 12-4, 2002: 10-6, 2003: 7-9, 2004: 2-14, 2005: 4-12 Perspective: catch it. How many rings do the Dolphins have? You still celebrate the perfect season every year? Very nostalgic. Now, how many rings do the Niners have? More than the fish, that's for sure. I understand your jealousy though - it's pathetic, but it's all you have to cling to when curled up in the fetal postion at night alone and scared. Seriously though - as a fan, I believe the team is finally overcoming the cap, and building into a competitive franchise. It took time to do that - but they are indeed moving forward. football_scooter 0 Posted March 24, 2006 How dare you compare the greatness that is the Miami Dolphins to the lowely Fourty Niners! the salary cap created turmoil for the Niners - fortunately it appears that the worse is over and the future continues to brighten. your fish got CPep - there ya go. Hit or miss acquisition I think, but like the Niners, they've been somewhat desperate to revitalize the QB position. You had Marino, we had Montanna then Young. All three tough acts to follow. jocstrap 8 Posted March 24, 2006 Note to all - Don't mess with the 49er's or Scooter will be all over you. He knows his stuff and you better have a good argument. Scooter - rounds 10-15 in a 12 team redraft. You like Rashuan Woods?(i'm an osu fan), or who is going to get 5/6 receiving td from the wr position?- TE NOT INCLUDED. football_scooter 0 Posted March 25, 2006 as a niners fan, watching Rice go to the Raiders was pretty ugly Agreed - that was the ugliest. Followed closely by watching Montana wearing the wrong color red in KC. Barf. Third worst was seeing Rice wearing Steve Largent's laundry. Note to all - Don't mess with the 49er's or Scooter will be all over you. He knows his stuff and you better have a good argument. notreallyijustliketoargue? Not so much any more. I make no recommendation on the Niners this season. Too many Q's still what with the draft looming & FA still in the works. Ask me in July. Woods shouldn't be any more than a last round flyer. I loved the guy coming out of college, but neither of the coaching regimes had much positive to say about him. I think Antonio Bryant pretty much has the #1 spot locked down, and Woods will have to compete with Arnaz Battle, Derrick Hamilton, and Eric Johnson for looks from a second-year quarterback. football_scooter 0 Posted March 25, 2006 Great move by the Niners. Now they just need to draft Vernon Davis!! I am in the minority who would really like to see this move. With a young QB, having a big target like that would be a tremendous boost - and Davis would have fairly decent fantasy value as well as a late round TE grab. He's definately a playmaker, and one who can block as well, which obviously makes him multi-dimentional - if the elite defensive players are off the board, Davis would be a slight reach at 6, but would fill a need. I am pretty well convinced that Eric Johnson is fragile. Or hey could deal that 6 pick to Denver, who I am sure covets Davis like a fat kid likes ho-ho's. By then Allen will be retired. It's true that Allen won't be paving the way to any Super Bowls, but I think the Niners should have two goals this season: 1) Develop Alex Smith into a solid starter and 2) Instill some pride and professionalism in the locker room. If Allen helps accomplish those goals, then his impact will be felt long after he's gone in two years.

ARg, tough choice because I really think Eric Johnson can make a comeback, he is still pretty young and can shake off the injury bug. I think someone like Mario Williams, AJ Hawk, or Michael Huff would be a better pick at 6 because our defense really needs to improve, and adding any of those guys would instantly help. If we really want Davis, we should trade down, because I think he won't be picked until the middle of the 1st round, and I'm sure there is a team in there (Cards? Rams? Browns? Ravens?) that is willing to trade their pick and maybe a 3rd round pick for a chance to get Cutler or Young. Just my opinion, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Niners do draft Davis at 6. Trouble is that I don't see any of Hawk, Huff or Williams making it to 6. You never know, and with trades funny things can happen and people can slide - if I'm Nolan, I wait until the 1st 5 picks have been made and then decide if a deal is better than who's left. If Hawk or williams are there, I'd be all for taking either. But if not, then it's a decision between dealing down (depending on that the options are) and taking Davis...in which case I wouldn't mind seeing them grab Davis.
