While drawing out the battle plan for the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers quietly signed a safety according to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. The 49ers have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with free agent Chad Williams of the Ravens.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

that's why we didn't pick Bing?

This draft just reveals how big a mistake the Alex Smith pick was. 49ers could of taken Braylon Edwards with the first pick in 05 and still got the guy they really wanted-Matt Leinart- this year with the 6th pick. What do you guys think?

Michael Robinson, RB anyone?

ESPN made a mistake, he is a QB converted into a WR.

Big guy, not a good pick though.

I guess we're just still trying to get Alex Smith some weapons.

I don't get why nobody called Eli manning a bust last offseason, but everyone is thinking Alex Smith is a bust right now.

Nine teams passing on Leinart shows what a big mistake the Niners made in not waiting a year for him to come out?

Yeah, he's probably a WR, that's why I was confused with the RB tag.

I guess the Niners are thinking of a Randle El type WR with the threat of throwing.

another WR for the 6th round pick..

WR, Delanie Walker, Central Missouri

3 WRs in a row...one of them should turn out decent

Wouldn't surprise me if they gave him a look at RB. They already have a trick-play WR in Arnaz Battle.

It seems as if the 49ers were impatient with the QB situation. Alex Smith was the best QB available in 05, but it was a seriously weak QB class. If Alex Smith was in the 06 draft, he would of been projected as the 4th best QB. Despite the weak options at QB, the 49ers got caught up in filling that one area of need.

Now here in 06, Cutler and Leinart were available to the 49ers at 6. Both QBs are widely considered better prospects then Smith. IMO, it highlights how bad the Alex Smith pick was.

They spent the #1 pick in 2005 on a player who would of gone in the mid to late 1st in 2006.

In 2006, they could of filled that position with a significantly better player at the 6th spot. Alex Smith was a bad #1 pick.

Where does Alex Smith rank when compared to QBs taken in over last 3 years? Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, Big Ben, Matt Leinart, Vince Young, Jay Cutler?

I don't get why nobody called Eli manning a bust last offseason, but everyone is thinking Alex Smith is a bust right now.

Look at the stats and you will understand. Both players started 7 games.

Eli Manning's rookie campaign:

1043 yards 6 TDs 9 Ints 3 fumbles

Alex Smith's rookie campaign:

875 yards 1 TD 11 Ints 11 fumbles

Yea, I understand the argument of the stats, but Manning came in 2004 with a 5-4 Giants team and was 1-6 as the starting QB, only having 2 good games, getting 5 of his 6 TDs. His best game was his last game of the year.

Alex Smith was thrown into the starting lineup while the Niners were 1-3 and beaten up. Sure, his first few games were UGLY AS HELL, but he did help the Niners win the last 2 games of the season and showed potential.

No, he does not look like the next Montana or Young, but I'm not giving up on him yet, especially with Vernon Davis coming in, kinda like a Jeremy Shockey for Eli, VD is going to help ASmith get his numbers up.

Alex Smith in the 16th round..anyone?

To answer your original question, why even ask? No one knew where Leinart would go this year, at this time last year so it's kind of a silly question, isn't it?

Uh, yeah, so long as you ignorantly ignore the talent level of the offense and defense of the respective teams. :bench: Giants with a solid OL, a pro-bowl RB in Barber and an upper tier defense...Niners with none of those things and perhaps the worst o-line in football.

Man, you should change your handle to Einstien and move on...you're way too smart for us Niner fans. :P
