GobbleDog 997 Posted May 1, 2006 ***Official Kentucky Derby Thread*** Edit function.... your "derby" title ain't doing it.
dcOne 2 Posted May 1, 2006 This is the best derby field in a long time. Lot's of horses look "failsafe"...but someone's gotta lose. Brother Derek- made his last 4 races look easy--winning his last without the jockey even touching him with the whip. Current favorite. IMO, won't be favorite at post time. Can he rate (stay off the lead) is the BIG question. If he tries to stay with Sinister Minister--or is even close to Sinister Minister the first 1/2 of the race, he'll be toast by 1 mile, and will finish up the track. Lawyer Ron-6 for 6 his last 6 races. UNDEFEATED on DIRT. Appears to be versatile--can stalk or lead or even close from the back. Only knock against him, is his slow times. Barbaro- undfeated. Training superbly at Churchill. Could be post time favorite. Sweet Northern Saint- Best prep race (speed figure) of any of the horses in the field. To me, he is the "bandwagon horse". Everyone is all over him. AP Warrior- Great Pedigree. Too bad he hasn't lived up to it. Point Determined- Perfect running style to win this years Derby. Great genes also. Seems to be "hitting his best stride" about now. Sinister Minister- Only has one speed--FAST. Can't be rated--at all. Will run as fast as he can as far as he can, trying to stay in front. A couple others will attempt the same thing. They can't all be first, and will burn themelves out trying. Will likely fade at top of stretch. Those that remained close to him the first 1/2 will fade also. IF...for some reason--I don't see any at this point....he can run uncontested and unpressured the first 1/2...he can win. Coolest name of the bunch. Steppenwolfer: Great chance if pace is fast--which it is likely to be. My picks: Point Determined, Steppenwolfer, Lawyer Ron I thing Brother Derek will be to close to the front runners early, and get fried with the rest of them. This year, there is a great chance at a long shot winning. Someone on ESPN had a novel idea. Take 2 front runners, 2 stalkers, and 2 closers, and box them in an exacta or trifecta. You could take any of these angles also: Brother Derek--(his trainer is in a wheelchair, and it seems of late, that the "feel good" horse (lol) wins. ) Sinister Minister/Northern Saint go 1-2--(Sinner...Saint) Brother Derek/Lawyer Ron go 1-2---(two great horses with people names--like "Smarty Jones") Point Determined/AP Warrior go 1-2--(In 2001, Point Given and AP Valentine ran 1-2 in 3 races in a row--including Preakness and Belmont. AP Warrior and AP Valentine have the same daddy.....Point Given IS Point Determine's daddy)

GobbleDog 997 Posted May 1, 2006 Lawyer Ron-6 for 6 his last 6 races. Appears to be versatile--can stalk or lead or even close from the back. Only knock against him, is his slow times. I like this horse. Slow times mean little in a 20 horse field where good positioning is key. Even the fastest horse in the world will lose if he's completely surrounded. pingpong 0 Posted May 2, 2006 Last 20 Derby winners: 2005 Giacomo Sumbitch beat out Afleet Alex to roon his hopes.
dcOne 2 Posted May 2, 2006 Sumbitch beat out Afleet Alex to roon his hopes. Because of an incredibly fast pace. Alex was too close to the lead (like 3 lengths off). He was fried...but was amazingly able to hang onto 3rd place. That same scenario could happen this year (a long-@ss shot winning it).
dcOne 2 Posted May 2, 2006 Which one is the best mudder? Barbaro. His father was a mudder. His mother was a mudder. He loves the slop. He eats the slop. Seriously....he ran on a muddy track like it was dry.
