Interesting question, so I looked it up. Apparently Mark Wohlers reached 103 in spring training in '95, and several other pitchers have gotten it to 102. I've seen Wagner hit 101. Anecdotal evidence has some older players getting to 107, but I highly doubt that.

that was before his case of the yips had him bouncing the ball to the plate.

40 by the way.  :ninja:

People watch:

Home Run Derbys

3-point and Slam Dunk competitions

NFL skills challenges

I think the volleyball one would be just as cool to see as any of the above.

All of these have skills that your average man has. We have almost all played one of the big 3 at one time and are interested in the skills it takes. The last time I played VB was in high school and it was just a game to kill time and watch the girls boobs bounce. I don't know ANYONE that plays or did play VB for real or would care in the slightest about it.

As a side note there are 20 so far on the negitive side and 3 on the positive side in your poll. Just as a straw poll you may be able to make a guess that this would not be something viable outside the VB community which would almost make it pay per view.

That's because those Pros are just as much a recognizable celebrity/star as they are an athlete. For the most part, those competitions are boring to watch, but you watch them to see how your favorite guy does. Volleyball has a small handful of athletes that few people may recognize. That's really what it comes down too.

I would not be able to point out the best known VB player out of a lineup of 2.

I know what you are saying, but I think if the general "big three" public saw a taste of what it was like via a couple well done ads they might check it out.

That's being optomistic!

They're also the Top 3 (or 3 outa the top 4) sports. Not so w/v-ball.

Yeah, but the actual event is more interesting. I don't ride bulls or play in hurling matches, but I will watch both if I'm flipping around and I see them. I watch the ski jump in the Olympics even though it's the only time I ever see it.

I have yet to meet a male athlete or general sports fan that didn't say "holy sh1t!" after seeing an open level hitting warm up when the guys are trying to impress and not just warm up their arms.

It would be like watching pro boxers hit a bag that measured their power somehow, but with a more impressive aftermath.

I see you making all these comparisons that to me are not realistic. I just can't see how you can compare VB to boxing, baseball, football, or damn near any sport. I understand its because you are a fan and biased but comparing VB to any of the sports that you have mentioned does not seem correct to me.

We have two company after work sports we play. Slow pitch softball and volleyball. We get a lot of foriegn guys in our company (engineering) and they are invited to play. They usually have never played either sport. They pick up volleyball very quickly and they end up playing it regularly. They usually completely embarass themselves trying to play softball and they usually give up ever trying after a couple times.

I've been to tons of V-ball matches and have never been  when watching warmups. I appreciate the arm speed and their "hops" but not in awe...ever!

I don't think you've been to any open level / Div 1A indoor matches then. The difference is substantial.

Company volleyball/picnic volleyball is practically a different sport than competitive volleyball. I'm sure they would have liked basketball and picked it up as well, but still suck-diddily-ucked in the grand scheme of things.

Everyone but EM = The people that think this is a stupid idea.

EM = The only person that thinks this is a good idea. Oh and by the looks of the poll, maybe his alias.

Sink your savings into it, go ahead and watch it flop.

Wrong!

Unless you don't count UCLA vs Univ. of Hawaii, Penn St., BYU Div. I type volleyball. You are barking up the wrong tree, 'cause I know my volleyball...Mr. Libero!
