Ty Law signs with Chiefs

Recommended Posts

Ty Law money hungry bas@#$%! Remings me of Ricky Henderson who played until he was 100 in baseball years.

As a Jet fan I wish we could've signed him but he was too expensive. The guy can flat out play. Opposing QB's will not throw his way too many times. He wasn't 100% until mid-season and he still had a good year with 10 INTs. This will definitely help KC's defense. Whoever plays opposite Law better be ready to play every Sunday b/c the ball will be coming their way. I believe Surtain is playing the opposite corner. Good sign for KC.

Ty Law will help put KC over the top, imo. The top of what, Im not exactly sure. But he will help prevent them from having scores run up on them by shutting down opponents primary receivers. Lower scores allowed by KC's D mean less passes by KC's O, and more running and fantasy points for Larry Johnson.....bottom line. Ty Law with the Chiefs makes LJ a lock #1 overall pick.

Really can't comment in full until you see the guaranteed money.

This is a very nice short term move for the Chiefs. It addresses a big need and helps them remain a playoff contender. They are a team that could make some noise if some things fall into place. On the flipside this is a team that looks like it's headed for long term trouble as many key players are on the wrong side of 30 (Trent, Gonzo, Kennison, Roaf, Shields, Dunn, Weigmann, Hicks, Browning, Dalton, Surtain, Knight and now Law) and I'm not sure Herm is anything too special as a coach. Therefore this move makes even more sense if you think this is the last opportunity to make a run for it with this group.

As for the Pats this is a tough break. Law would have really been a nice balance with the kids they currently have. My guess is once the guaranteed money is known we'll know why they didn't bring him back.

don't underestimate the youth on this team:

QB Croyle/ Printers

HB LJ

FB/ TE Kris Wilson

OG Bryan Waters

OT Will Svitek

OT Jordan Black

WR Samie Parker

WR Crap Thorpe

WR Jeff Webb

DE Tamba Hali

DE Jared Allen

OLB Derrick Johnson

OLB Keyaron Fox

MLB Kawika Mitchell

S Bernard Pollard

CB Julian Battle

especially our STs:

PK Tynes

P Colquitt

not saying all of these guys are going to be all-world, but a few of them have the potential to be. Croyle and Printers have a year or two to learn but inevitably one will take over the reins once Green retires.

The only thing standing in the way of Canton for LJ is injuries. Please Lord bless this man and make his lifetime in the NFL a prosperous one donning the Red & Gold.

Kris Wilson has the potential to be our fulltime FB, but he has a lot of learning to do to get there.

Waters will eventually be the foundation of this line, but all the young guys that were drafted this year and last, and will likely be drafted next year have the opportunity to learn from some of the best ever.

Only time will tell for the receivers, but I see them getting their chance to shine.

Jared Allen has only gotten better since he's entered the lineup, let's hope he only progresses. Hali has a lot to prove being a 1st rounder. We also have some young DTs that will be fighting to make the team this year, it's wide open. Only John Browning is really a lock at this point IMO.

There's not enough I can say about our LBs, they continue to impress me and look to be the bright spot for year's to come. Then we also have a couple younger guys in the secondary that should get their turn in time. Only time is going to tell, but I'm always optimistic.

BTW, good luck this year with Eric Warfield Boston. In the meantime we'll be kicking some butt with your good friend Ty Law! :)

The core of this team is over 30. There are some big time youngsters like the two Johnsons but overall this is not a strong group of young players. The time is now for KC which is why this signing makes sense.

As for Warfield...if he makes the team hopefully he'll help. Right now, it's a 50/50 shot he'll make it.

Free agent cornerback Ty Law is closing in on a five-year deal worth more than $30 million with the Kansas City Chiefs according to an NFL source. The Chiefs have been pursuing Law for the last few months

So who's starting opposite him? and have the chiefs solved their defensive problems?

Patrick Surtain, another aging CB of Pro Bowl ability.

Law is that last BIG piece in the team puzzle. There is no one thing that you can point to and say is a weakness. There is a nice mix of age and youth. The new Head Coach will probaly streamline things a LOT, which is good in the short term. As with any talented team, which has not made it to the top, the question of whether they ever will is looming. Anything but the playoffs will be a major disappointment, but this signing says they are taking their shot at the trophy.

In fantasy term the Chiefs will be playable, but not good. They should be under 20 PPG, and fair to good on turn overs, but the pressure on the QB was weak last year. How the new scheme effects that remains to be seen.

I think you have it exactly. As Boston noted, there is a young side to the roster as well, but the core is aging. This is the first really balanced team that the Chefs have fielded in a generation, and even there its a a bit one sided, though focusing on the running game will change some of that as well.

5 years 30 mil tells us nothing. You know he'll never see the 5th year or all 30 mil. It will be interesting to see how much is guaranteed and what the signing bonus was. Also did any other teams even approach the same #'s?

I got this from another poster at Chiefsplanet...

FT says the deal is not likely to be an expensive one, but then again its PFT.

LAW'S DEAL LIKELY NOT A GREAT ONE

The early consensus in league circles is that the contract signed by cornerback Ty Law with the Chiefs is not a great deal.

Why? Because hard numbers have yet to be leaked to the press by his agents, Carl and Kevin Poston.

For most contracts, the thinking is that if the details aren't made available within 24 hours, this means that the agent doesn't want the details to be scrutinized, which means that the details aren't great.

In the case of the Postons, the "24-hour rule" becomes the "24-minute rule."

A league source with knowledge of the Chiefs' negotiating strategies for free agents surmises that, given the absence of hard numbers, the package is likely a series of five one-year deals, with a sizeable roster bonus and/or an option bonus due in years two through five.

The educated guess as to the first-year money is a $4 million signing bonus and $1 million in salary, and that Law would get another $5 million or so in 2007 if the Chiefs decide to continue the deal.

5 year deal for Ty Law ;)

a declining Law > Bartee/ McCleon/ Warfield/ any other scrubs that have tried playing corner for us the last 3/ 4 years.

His play will not improve the defense as much as I believe that the other players on the team feel more confident knowing they have someone reliable on both receivers. Gunther will be more inclined to go for all-out blitzes, as he did in the 90's with DT, N Smith, Saleameua and crew.

Opposing teams will also now have to alter their offensive gameplan, as you do not have a weakside you can consistently pick on. We will start seeing some coverage sacks, something we haven't seen since the days of James Hasty, Dale Carter, etc.

I am very very very excited about this signing. The weak link now becomes the DT position, but hopefully the improvement in coverage helps those guys out as well.
