More HoF Talk...

Recommended Posts

Probably an old thread, but this conversation came up at work about a week ago, as I'm sure it does where all of you work too. Does Flutie deserve to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame? I stress the Pro Football part, since it's not exclusively NFL....

Warren Moon

5 Grey Cup Titles

21,288 passing yds

144 TDs

*Threw for 5648 yds in 1983

NFL career stats:

49,325 passing yds

291 TDs, 233 INT

1736 Rush yds, 22 TDs

4 - 4000 yd passing seasons

8 Pro Bowls

Doug Flutie

3 Grey Cup Titles, 3 Grey Cup MVPs

41,355 passing yds

270 TDs

*Threw for 6619 yds, single season record

CFL Most Outstanding Player 6 times

NFL career stats:

14,715 passing yds

86 TDs, 68 INT

1634 Rush yds, 10 TD

1 Extra Point

1 Pro Bowl

I still say yes, even though his total numbers don't compare that well with Moon. Moon's CFL stats are being listed as part of the consideration for his induction this year, so it would only seem fair that even though Fluties numbers are essentially reversed that his CFL career should earn him a Hall of Fame spot as well. All the guy did was win games in the NFL and was never given the opportunities that Moon received. Constantly looked over for someone younger or someone "better".

I say, Doug Flutie:

No freegin way for Flutie. Mooney is a borderline candidate but acceptable pick on stats alone.

Here are the problems with Flutie:

- The NFL Hall of Fame should be based on purely NFL stats.... who the hell recommended that CFL stats be included? How dumb is that?

- Flutie has been a CAREER backup that will ceratinly spark a team off the bench but he is 100% USELESS as a starter in the NFL and thats why he bounced from team to team never making anough of a difference to stay anywhere as a bonafide starter.

- What has Flutie really won? One big college game on a hail mary pass? Big focking deal.... no serious playoff games to speak of, no real "test" games were ever won by him.

- Flutie is a nice guy with good hair and an autistic kid so we generally feel sorry for him. Well, thats a nice toucy-feely story but it does NOT get you into the Hall of Fame. C'mon!!!!

- His Band and album were the GAYEST thing ever created and that should also keep him out of the HOF.

 :first: :P

It's called "The Pro Football Hall of Fame", so yes canadian football can be included. Just as in the basketball hall of fame includes college, pro, and international hoops.

I guess that's the perception problem with the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It's not called the NFL Hall of Fame. If it were, then there is no discussion because Flutie's stats and accolades don't merrit it. However, his Professional Football stats should at least put him in the running. He even spent a season in the USFL -- not much of a league, but Pro Football nonetheless.

And I don't think that the Hall of Fame is based solely on stats. I think it exemplifies overall good people who were outstanding players in professional football. Probably another source of debate, as well.

Are the XFL's Hall-eligible yet? Because He Hate Me needs to be in.

In the baseball HOF you have to be an "overall good person". In the pro football HOF they don't give a rats ass about what you did off the field. If it did arguable the greatest LB of all time wouldn't even get a sniff of the HOF.

He got plenty of sniffing done during his playing days...

Moon must be in the hall of fame. He had some amazing years. Flutie was a great guy and a wondeful feel good story... but that doesnt mean he should be in the HoF. Thats like saying Rudy should be in the HoF!

Moon certainly is a future HOFer.

Flutie probably could've been but I doubt he ever will be.

Contrary to what I read above, Flutie was one of the best QBs

to play the game in the 90s. The thing that killed his NFL future

wasn't his talent or his height. It was that he crossed the picket

line (or snuck under it  ) during the player's strike in 1987.

That made him a scab in most NFL people's minds and killed his NFL

career. New England got rid of him and he's from Canton (MA,

not Ohio, which is basically next-door to Foxbooro) When he did finally

play for Buffalo he did very well but got a raw deal when in their

infinite wisdom, the management decided that Rob Johnson should

start in the playoffs even though Flutie carried them there (Music

City Miracle game) but that's another story for another time.

I think Moon will be inducted but not for about 10 more years.

Flutie just didnt put up any sort of stats in the real league....as Moon did....Flutie spent more time as a backup than a starter in the real league.....how can someone possibly get in with that?

Moon is a given but the only way I let Doug Flutie in the HOF is if he's sweeping the floors.
