In the real world, most likely every single one of us would try to get paid as much as humanly possible for the job that we do. Football players are no different. Besides, their careers, on average, are like 3 years. I don't blame them one bit for trying to get every penny they can. It's all about economics - you are worth whatever someone is willing to pay you.

Barry's Juice 0 Posted August 1, 2006 I agree. Its crap!!! These greedy bastards are flippin up sports for me. I think Ill watch more college (oh wait?). Its so hard to afford $20 for parking, $75 for the game, $7 for a beer X ????, $20 for garlic fries & a dog, $20 for a cap for my son .... 49 million is not enough to play a sport as an unproven 20 year old!! Yeah, hold out for fifty punk! many years back KG refused an offer & they asked the owner if he could believe that he turned down the offer??? The owner said that he couldnt believe that he offered it to him to begin? Well he got it, gross! Im sure its got something to do with jealousy, but if I was to hold out at my job & Im pretty good at it. Id be lookin for a new one!.!.!.! Okay, bad example! Last I checked 5% of 8 million is $400,000. I doubt there are more than a handful of people here making that
mark32esu 18 Posted August 1, 2006 he's only one play away from a career ending injury, so why not try to get paid while he can? i don't agree with it either, but if he can do it, then why not? i probably would

dreadlocks34 0 Posted August 1, 2006 The one thing the NFL is missing is a rookie cap ala the NBA. Giving rookies shorter contracts with less money and slotted fairly exact dollar amounts would leave more money for veteran players and less poor cap troubled contracts for teams ie Akili Smith etc. I'm sure one comeback is these guys could have their career ended on any given play and thus they need to get what they can when they can but I don't see it that way. The NFL has it almost right but this is one of the very few things they are not correct on.

HedgeHawg 0 Posted August 1, 2006 While I agree that the salaries that NFL players make can be absolutely ridiculous, I don't see the greed in Reggie Bush's holdout. From what I understand, as the 2nd pick overall, he simply wanted a salary that fell between the 1st pick and the 3rd picks of the draft respectively. If you want to blame anyone, blame the Texans for setting the "salary bar" so high for the 1st pick overall.

akaoni 0 Posted August 1, 2006 If you want to complain about greed, don't complain about the players, complain about the owners. The players are the product and deserve to get paid for their part in this multi-million dollar enterprise. These guys are essentially selling their bodies for our entertainment. If you've seen some of the retired NFL players at 50 or 60, you'll see why they want to milk the game for every penny they can get. They pay the price later on. Many will have serious problems with arthritis, and other orthepedic conditions. Meanwhile, super-rich owners reap the benefits without danger of so much as a hang nail. I'm not saying that the owners are necessarily bad guys, but you can't cut them out of the equation. Further, if we really want to get to the root causes of the high salaries NFL players demand, maybe we should look in the mirror. It's our obsessive passion for football that drives this whole system. If we weren't willing to spend hours debating the relative worth of players on bulletin boards and millions of dollars buying NFL Sunday ticket, tee-shirts, video games, ball caps, jerseys, and the like, then the game wouldn't be the profitable. In the end it's our demand for the product which allows high salaries, and drives the profitability of the NFL. The NFL is a business and wouldn't exist without profit. By blaming the players for greed we're trying to deny their role and importance in the system. They provide us with the game and passtime that we love, and should be compensated for it. Returning to the topic of this thread. Are the rooks salaries too high compared to what the vets make? Probably, but that doesn't mean that they're wrong to try to get what they can. sorry about the rant
