Blitzen 0 Posted October 1, 2006 I must have driven over that overpass hundreds of times. That's two overpasses down in that city in a couple of years. And they were all supposed to have been tested.
BMoney 0 Posted October 1, 2006 i see no replies..so im wondering if this was old news.... i saw this and ive added it to my list of ways i dont want to go.... bad enough driving under and having some loser throw something heavy at your car...but to have the entire overpass fall?... thats scary stuff... I'd hate to be the search and rescue crew that pulled the 2 cars from under the overpass. That was prolly a sight to forget.

Blitzen 0 Posted October 1, 2006 At least 4 dead in the two crushed cars. Imagine if this had happened at rush hour. Apparently, the two crushed cars were compacted to below the rescuers' knees. Worst thing for the authorities is that this overpass had been inspected a year ago and passed with no issues, so they can't really tell the people that they can trust the other overpasses because they have been inspected. This will likely be an electoral year both federally and provincially so imagine the amount of money that will be thrown at this issue over the coming months... Apparently, someone had alerted the authorities that pieces of concrete were falling off the overpass an hour before the collapse. Depending on just how large the pieces were (and someone did go on site and decided not to close it off), someone might be in deep doo-doo.

tony hardware 0 Posted October 1, 2006 In Boston, the product of the Big Dig, a new tunnel which bring I-90 to Logan International Airport, had a 12 ton ceiling tile collapse on a woman and husband driving to the airport. It has crippled traffic, sending crazy detours through South Boston, on the Downtown surface roads and through the old tunnels. First, imagine the odds of getting hit by a freak falling ceiling tile? Second, the husband crawled out unscathed while his wife was crushed to death (she was driving). Traffic is slowly improving, but it calls into question the safety of Boston's tunnels and all the money spent on this project.
Blitzen 0 Posted October 1, 2006 unions suck and are for people who are afraid of losing their jobs to others who can do it faster, better and cheaper. As far as I know, the engineering firm Dassau Soprin (pretty well established here) did the work in 1970. I'm guessing this wasn't unionized but I may be wrong. If the overpass was built 36 years ago then it was probably a poor inspection that is to blame. The original constructors and engineers probably did their job. It probably had more to do with failure to do proper maintenance.
