Foley acquaintances question alcoholism

AP - Tue Oct 3, 9:53 PM ET

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - When disgraced former Rep. Mark Foley announced he was entering rehab for treatment of alcoholism and "other behavioral problems," some of those who have known him for years were shocked and suspicious, saying they rarely saw him drink.

Among the skeptics, Rep. Peter King (news, bio, voting record), R-N.Y., a former colleague, said on Fox News Channel: "I don't buy this at all. I think this is a phony defense. The fact is, I think he's responsible for what he did here and I think it's a gimmick.rink"

Where is the "I think he's a boozer, but doesn't care that he's a boozer, but is now using it as a ploy" option?

Excuses, excuses.

I hate how these sick focks have all of these excuses for their behavior. "I was molested by a congressman" "I am an alcoholic" blah blah.

So, you're an alcoholic and it makes it okay for you to talk to kids like that?

It is total crap, but it works. Time and again we have seen examples of people in the public eye who have done some sick sh|t. Their "crimes" vary from racism, to croneyism, to sexual assault and so on and so forth.

The common thread? Trying to blame/justify their behavior by portraying themselves as a victim...whether they're a victim of abuse, addiction, whatever. As well as how certain segments of our society not only forgive them for their actions, but in some cases make them a cause celebre. I actually tried to raise this point in another thread, but it didn't work out so well, as it quickly degenerated into a Dem/Rep...Lib/Con p|ssing match (imagine that :dunno: )

Not really, it didn't work out so well because you weren't comparing apples to apples. You wondered if gays and lesbians would take to Foley as well as they did to McGreevy. Completely different situations really. Gays and lesbians don't want a suspected child molester in their ranks. Come to think of it, nobody would.

I missed that thread Dave, but the answer is obvious. 1. No one is attacking Foley for being a gay man. Wait, the general public isn't attacking Foley for that. They are attacking him for being a child predator.

So an appropriate analogy would be whether NAMBLA will take up his defense in spite of his party afflilation (or because of it)

2. McGreevy's only mistake, to my knowledge was being gay and dishonest about it. Mostly to his wife and family, but also to the NJ voters.

It shouldn't have to be mentioned, but I will. Being gay is a fundamentally different issue that preying on minors-especially minors you have a position of power over.

I never said that it was an apples to apple type of thing...but there are similarities...and I was merely using McGreevy as an example.

Also, McGreevy is guilty of way more than being gay and being dishonest about it. The guy was tainted by corruption before that scandal broke. He has ties to inlfuence peddling and bribery...some of which I am told is detailed in his book and may open the eyes of some prosecutors and open McGreevy to additional scruitiny.

I don't hate McGreevy for lying to the voters about his sexual orientation. I hate him for making his boy toy in charge of protecting me from terrorists. I hate him for using being gay as an excuse for that.

I'll take your word for it. I know nothing about McGreevy except the two headline. Was his boyfriend qualified for homeland security? In any way? He HAD to be more qualified that ole' Brownie.

Boy, for that job having so much importance in today's world. It seems to be the beacon of favoritism and lack of qualifications.

I believe that his boy toy had majored in poetry (I kid you not.) Also, he was an Israeli national and, as a non-US citizen, he did not have the requisite security clearance to view much of the intelligence gathered at the federal level.

So, as scary as this sounds, it appears that he was, in fact, less qualified than Brownie.

Hence, my utter disgust for the man and the NJ Dem party for protecting him and keeping him in office until it was too late for a special election.
