hoffdaddy 1 Posted November 21, 2006 That's right. I've been hunting deer since I was 13 years old, and never saw a bear in the wild. Well, that changed Sunday. Sitting in my tree stand at about 3:30, and I see a flash of black. Then the flash turns right, and stops 30 yards from my stand. One of my fellow hunters was walking to my stand to get me, and apparently pushed this bear out of it's spot. It looked back at him, then up at me, the scurried away from us. My fellow hunter was maybe 75 yards behind her, and never saw her. Marke me down as crapping my pants. While bears are afraid of people, you just never know how a wild animal will react. And while bears can climb trees, I was at least happy to have the high ground and a high powered rifle. It was a pretty scary, yet amazing experience. I'll be back in the woods this week, but I'll definitely be a little more alert. May even stock up on bear pepper spray.

hoytdwow 202 Posted November 21, 2006 I'm into hunting as well. I love the challenge of hiding in a tree and shooting unsuspecting animals with a high-powered rifle as they walk by.

Blitzen 0 Posted November 21, 2006 How do you tell the difference between a black bear and a grizzly? If you're chased by a bear, climb up a tree only to have the bear climb after you, knock you down and eat you, that's a black bear. If you're chased by a bear, climb up a tree only to have the bear knock the tree down and eat you, that's a grizzly.
Bert 1,128 Posted November 21, 2006 Next time you go hunting with your friend lace up a pair of running shoes. When he asks you "Why you are wearing running shoes?" Tell him "In case we come across any bears." When he tells you "You can't out run a bear." Tell him "I don't have to out run the bear I just have to out run you!" kozmiq 70 Posted November 21, 2006 During about a 6 year stretch of my life, I decided to learn to hunt. I went out maybe 12-15 times and always with knowledgeable, capable and experienced friends. I never got in a treestand but always walked around. I even shot a 12 point buck one Thanksgiving during my 3rd year going out. We ate every bit of it. Therefore, I see no difference in that and eating a hamburger that McDonalds got from butchering a cow. One year we stumbled upon fresh bear tracks in West Virginia. I was told it was a smallish bear but I was amazed how big it's paws were. It did scare me knowing there was a bear close by. I was glad I had a rifle although it was only a 30-30. After a period of time I no longer hung out with those friends and haven't gone out since. But I'll never forget the thrill of nailing that one buck. And eating it.
