MDC 7,442 Posted January 10, 2007 I thought they signed Coughlin to an extension last year? They don't necessarily have to honor it. Is there any new news here?

Jeremy 0 Posted January 10, 2007 He had 1 year left after this previous season, but they just signed him to 1 year extension on top of that Are you serious? He's clearly lost that lockerroom. When that happens, the coach has to get fired. Wow.

davebg 0 Posted January 10, 2007 I don't like Coughlin, but I understand why the Giants kept him on. They needed to make a quick decision on a coach...likely before they had decided on a GM. Unless there was an opportunity to get a truly great coach there is no way the Giants were going to sign a new coach to a multi-year deal w/out the new GM's input. Which leads us to the fact that there really isn't a coach like that available right now. I think that the Giants figured let's stick w/the devil we know for this year and we'll see what happens. If Coughlin tanks they can cut him loose then and it will only cost them the same year of compensation as if they fired him this year. Plus, I think that ownership would really like to bring on a coach w/aproven track record. It would not suprise me at all if they cut Coughlin loose at the end of next year and make a play for Cowher. So now he has two years left? Coughlin sucks. Yes and yes. Once they decided to keep Coughlin they had no choice but to extend him for another year. Coaches rarely play out the final year on their deals unless it's their choice b/c they want to be a free agent of sorts at the end of the season. If you think Coughlin had lost most of the locker room w/his actions, making him a lame duck coach would have finished the job. The fact that they only extended him for one year pretty much supports my theory that they didn't keep him on b/c they were so enamoured w/him, but b/c they just didn't like any of the other candidates better, so they didn't make a change for the sake of change and pretty much deferred this all to next year. Jeremy 0 Posted January 10, 2007 Which leads us to the fact that there really isn't a coach like that available right now. That's a good point. There were a lot of new coaches hired last year, so the pool is pretty depleted. As a Packer fan I know what it's like going into a season with no chance. In the long run it may work out better for them. 2007 won't be much fun for Giants fans though.

You may be right but they'd be better off hiring a QB guru like Norm Chow than bringing Coughlin back for another year. The players are totally deaf to him. Agreed, but it didn't seem as if Chow was even in the running. He may turn out to be a good head coach, but he's not a proven guy and not a "must have" type of coach at this point. Again, I don't think there was a coach out there who is of such a high caliber that you would sign him to a multi-year deal before you have your GM in place. Short term, this does not bode well for the Giants, but long term we may be better off. What I really hope they do is bring in either a new O coord or QB coach who can make a difference w/Eli.
