Auction Draft

Recommended Posts

I have never been in one but we are considering one this year. Not really sure how they work.

I am in one keeper auction with a cap.

There is a lot more prep work and yearly maintenance, but the cap function makes it possible to turn over your team if you are crummy and compete the next year. The first year I won 3 or 4 games. The next year, with some shrewd off season acquisitions and in season trades I won the whole thing. You have to manage the cap intelligently and it is different.

The auction is fun and gives everyone an equal chance to get the top player(s). It can take a long time to do the auction so allow more relative time for the auction.

I've only done an auction draft once, but it was fun as hell. And I was pretty convinced that it's a more fair way to draft than the regular serpentine rounds drafting.

Here's a pretty good article, which was linked to from another site, on "Convincing Your Local League About Auction Drafting"

I also couldn't find a good site that explains how to conduct an auction draft. I'm probably not the best person to explain how it works. But if you can't find anything, let me know, I can try to paraphrase the directions that were given to me as to how to conduct an auction draft.

Auction / keeper league for about 10 yrs now. I'll just post the rules and you can ask questions.

•	$100 salary cap at draft - once the season starts, cap goes to $130
•	minimum of 15 players/maximum of 20 players per roster, increasing to 21 after draft
•	contract length: 1-5 years - salary increases 50% each year rounded up to nearest dollar
•	contract buyout - next season’s salary after release plus 0.25 times that salary for each remaining year of contract applied to salary cap in season after release
•	must sign at least 6 players 2 weeks before draft - minimum of 6 players to be under contract at all times, - players not signed to contracts go back into draft/auction pool
•	schedule to be based on SuperBowl taking place in week 16
•	Each team to start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 D, 1 PK
Franchise Player
•	Each team will be allowed to designate one player as a franchise player for one year only (cannot keep designating the same player again and again)
•	A franchised player is retained at the same auction price at which he was drafted
•	The player to be designated must be unsigned – it cannot be a free agent pickup or player already under contract
•	After being franchised for a year, a player may be signed to a contract in accordance with the rules above
•	Only players with a salary of $20 or more may be designated a franchise player
•	Designation of a franchise player shall be announced at the same time as contracts, as above
•	Franchise player shall be in addition to the 6 players who must be under contract prior to draft
Playoffs
•	half of the teams to a maximum of 8 in the playoffs
•	home team gets extra player in semifinals _ each team gets an extra player in superbowl
•	SuperBowl gets pot -
•	$40 to toilet bowl winner - same scheme applies to Toilet bowl
•	if uneven number for toilet bowl, best loser gets a bye
Trades
•	trades must be announced on the website a minimum of 72 hours
before kickoff of the first game of the week to take effect for that
			week
•	trading deadline is one hour before kickoff of first game of
final week of regular (pool) season
•	trades may be made in the offseason, from the end of the Keeper Superbowl to the deadline for submitting list of contracts (minimum 6 per team) and protected list
•	rules regarding roster limits and salary cap apply during offseason
•	trading resumes immediately following completion of auction
•	offseason trades to be announced by e-mail to pool, as website may not be available and no one will be paying attention in any case
•	trades are only reviewable on basis of salary cap/roster min or
max/contract min or max considerations unless they are incredibly
unfair to rest of pool, in which case trade can only be overturned
if unanimous agreement by pool (outside of trade principals) trade
must be challenged within 24 hours of announcement of trade on
website _ if trade challenged, trade will go ahead provisionally,
but trade participants will announce alternate starters in event
trade overturned no later than one hour prior to kickoff of first
game of week _ commissioner will announce challenge and create poll
to review trade (trade participants not to vote) any abstention from
vote will be considered a vote for the trade (although anyone unable
to access computer to vote [this means you Inferno]) may communicate
vote orally to a pool member, who will post message on the message
			board
Free Agency
•	free agency begins in week 3 and goes to trading deadline
•	teams allowed to pick up a maximum of 2 free agents (subject to roster limits)
•	all free agents picked up shall have salary cap value of $7, and cannot be resigned to contracts
•	free agency will be based on first come/first serve or waiver wire with all pickups to be announced on the site message board
Tiebreakers
•	we will use default end of season tiebreakers from site
•	tiebreaker in game will be reserve points
Expansion Rules
•	draft to occur before auction in which new owner has to pick a
minimum of 6 players from the rosters of existing owners, at salary
levels for season coming up, but no more than one player from each
			team for each new team
•	each team must protect 6 players who are under
contract _ if team has more than 6 under contract, the owner must
announce two weeks before auction which players are not protected

Good stuff, Walter, but it doesn't really explain how the draft actually works. Got anything on that?

Here's an article that explains auction drafting The article also has tips on strategy. The explanation isn't he clearest, but it's all I could find. The sections on nominating and bidding are kind of the key parts. Basically, you start out by nominating a bunch of players for bidding. Then you start bidding. Owners can bid on a player or pass. When all other owners have passed on a player, the owner who made the highest bid buys the player at that price. Then an owner nominates another player to replace the one that was bought. Bidding continues on the nominees who have not been bought yet.

Everyone has $100 - the cost of their keepers. Some keepers are cheap - $1-2 while others could be $20+

For the auction, it rotates around the room where names are tossed out and thebidding continues until you do the going ... going ... gone. There is always bitching about the cadence and someone always tosses out a higher bid at the last 3nd.

It continues until everyone is either out of money or at the roster limit.

Its best to throw out high priced players that you dont want so that others spend their money 1st. If the guy you really want goes later, some cant afford to bid high enough.

For a strategy, you just pick certain players to target in various tiers. Fill out your wish list with cheaper guys and figure out how high you are willing to go for the studs.

A typical team might be:

Bulger - $8

Favre - $5

LT - $40

T Jones - $9

Maroney - $8

Turner - $3

Some rook - $1

Evans - $10

Muhammed - $3

M Jones - $3

Curtis - $1

Witten - $3

Des Clark - $1

K1 - $1

K2 - $1

D1 - $2

D2 - $1

The top 10 overall will go for $25-$40

The next 10 - $15-25

The next 20 - $8-15

etc.

Thanks for the links, tj. I love the idea of a FF auction, but I've never been in one. I was in a couple of baseball ones though, and they were a lot of fun. They're a lot more interactive at the actual draft, and it's always funny to see people look away nonchalantly when a guy they covet comes up for bid. :D

About the only downside of an auction draft is that it's much harder to do over the internet.

If you have a long time to get it done (i.e. weeks) it works pretty well over a message board.

Here is my roster from 06

Keepers

QB Peyton Manning, IND $20 (could franchise him at same cost for 07 and then he would be released back to the auction in 08. OR, I could release him now and save the $20. Frnachise players do not count as 1 of the 6 keepers)

QB Michael Vick, ATL $4 (could sign him for $6 on a 1 yr deal or for longer at a 50% increase)

RB Cedric Benson, CHI (signed at $6 for 2007)

WR Reggie Wayne, IND (signed through 2008 at $5 and then $8 from a previous 5 yr deal that I signed back in '04. I got him for $1 and signed him to a 5 yr deal then)

(Back to the auction because his contract is up - Unrestricted Free agents)

RB Thomas Jones, CHI

RB Brian Westbrook, PHI

WR Steve Smith, CAR

TE Daniel Graham, NE

RB Maurice Morris, SEA

Available to sign at a 50% raise, long term or released back to auction. Need to have 6 signed at a minimum - the 3 keepers + 3 more from this list)

RB Jamal Lewis, BAL $4

RB Laurence Maroney®, NE $3

WR Andre Johnson, HOU $8

WR Lee Evans, BUF $4

WR Kevin Curtis, STL $2

WR Sharod White, ATL $1

TE Jason Witten, DAL $2

TE Dallas Clark, IND $3

PK David Akers, PHI $2

PK Stephen Gostkowski®, NE $1

Def Seahawks, Team Defense, SEA $1

Def Ravens, Team Defense, BAL $3

I need 3 keepers from this list at a minimum. You can resign a K or D at a cheap price to have more auction money or keep some players that are more expensive and useful, but have less cash.

I will likely sign Maroney for 2 yrs so he would make $5 in '07 and $8 in '08.

Lee Evans is a possible @ $6 for 07

Goskowski would be $2 in 07

The rest will likely go back to the auction.

About the only downside of an auction draft is that it's much harder to do over the internet.

While our owners prefer a face to face draft, from a small amount of investigation it looks like Fantasy Auctioneer is a pretty decent site for performing the auction online. I don't see anything on their site right now about football, but they do football auctions.

The ONLY drawback to an auction league is the free agent pool. If you find a site that will host an auction league then great. For a person to run the league and be an owner it's hard to pull off. The "blind" bidding to the commish can easily be trumped by the commish and look fishy.

Auction leagues are great though.

True, but you still have to get everyone together at the same time. With a traditional internet draft, you can take a couple of weeks to do a draft with everyone checking in once in a while.

I feel the most difficult aspect of an auction draft is putting a value on players before you go in. Some sites will have you break down the entire league of 'draftable' players, placing a value on each one according to the total cap space of your particular league. This will give you an idea of what each player is worth so you don't overspend. Not overspending is huge.

You're always going to have your jackasses who will drive up the bidding on a player they have no intention of drafting, just to jam you with a higher salary. Their key is playing this game during a safe period of the bidding as to not get stuck with that player. Once the bid gets higher, these clowns will quickly back out. But they've accomplished their goal. Of course this strategy can work both ways.

When it's your bid, occasionally throw out attractive players you don't plan to draft and let the other guys have at it. Start the bid at $2-3 (maybe higher) instead of $1. This slightly accelerates the bidding and spends other managers money. It also keeps you unpredictable. If another manager senses you are locked onto a certain player, especially one you throw out there, they will drive up the bid unmercifully as they know you really want that guy.

Another key item not mentioned here in these posts is whether your particular league makes you track everyone else's draft. Some leagues will have a designated guy, usually with a laptop, who tracks all the picks, dollars spent, and everyone's running salary total up to the second. This is huge, as it becomes very easy to calculate how much money your adversaries have left, along with what needs they still have left to fill. Again, this can be huge. Tracking everyone else's draft is an asskicker, especially when you are trying to formulate your own strategy and roster. Some leagues will make you do it, and if you come with a prepared system you're ahead already.

My tactical advice is two-fold. Have SOME sort of plan going in as to what dollar amount you wish to spend on each position. Just fill out ANY type of shell roster with dollar figures, or break down the entire league as some websites suggest. Anything will help. You can be flexible and manipulate around the dollar figures of your roster during the draft, but ALWAYS hold back at least $1 to cover your kickers, IDP's, and maybe your backup TE's. Secondly, have your usual draft material accessible and easy to interpret. An auction draft can occur at warp speed compared to a regular serpintine draft. I usually have a plethora of LAMINATED data containing my wish-list of player draft sheets, team schedules, power rankings etc. It helps if you can get to that stuff fast, and you don't want to be shuffling through a bunch of papers when that bid flies flies back around the table to you.

Auction drafts are asskickers. They will drain you and can take hours longer than traditional drafts. Bring water, maybe some grub. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL. And lastly, if you are a good poker player it helps. Good luck and good hunting.
